They bore the overburdened reader with unnecessary details and convoluted language. But it’s possible to write legal memoranda and briefs that are inviting and respectful of the reader’s scarce time, attention, and motivation. Well-written legal documents set out to be helpful and get to the point right away, then make that point with clarity and precision. The skill of communicating legal concepts in plain language is crucial for in-house counsel, who often serve as the point of contact between attorneys and the organizations they represent.
<br />
Join us at 12pm ET / 9am PT on Monday, March 11th for the next edition of our IHC Fundamentals Series as Elegant Legal Writing author Ryan McCarl shares writing strategies for in-house counsel. Ryan will discuss how to collaborate effectively with outside counsel on writing projects, discuss complex legal topics and litigation strategy with nonlawyers, and more. He will provide specific, actionable tips for writing about the law in a way that removes needless complexity and holds the interest of busy readers.
<br /><i>
Who Should Attend
</i><br />
This program is designed for any in-house legal professional who wants to write better.

Before joining the UCLA Law faculty and co-founding Rushing McCarl LLP, Mr. McCarl clerked for the Honorable David M. Ebel on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, worked as a litigator at WilmerHale and Hueston Hennigan, and founded an educational technology startup. He has published articles and book chapters on diverse topics including artificial intelligence and law, substantive due process, claim preclusion, constitutional vagueness doctrine, sovereign debt arbitration, and property rights. His articles have appeared in outlets including the Stanford Journal of International Law and Cincinnati Law Review.

Enforcement of HIPAA regulations and penalties are always on the minds of healthcare attorneys and their clients. Concerns about HIPAA compliance and the potential penalties for noncompliance drive an ongoing need for training employees and staff of hospitals and health systems, medical practices, and other healthcare organizations about HIPAA and its requirements.

As a matter of law, ethics and professional responsibility, tax practitioners must ensure the research that supports their advice is thorough, accurate, and up-to-date. The process can be uniquely challenging, requiring researchers to navigate a vast and diverse array of sources of tax authority, while weighing the nuanced relationships among them. This interactive session will provide a review of key federal and state materials pertinent to the tax practitioner, along with a series of time-saving best practices that address frequently asked questions about how to locate them efficiently. The course will be customized to attendees’ level of experience and specialties, as applicable, and will engage participants to test their knowledge of lesser-known research pathways and details about various types of tax primary materials.
<br /><i>
This program will:</i><br />
• Increase facility in locating key federal and state tax materials, with reference to the hierarchy of tax authority, sources of official publication, and common tools provided by tax research services
<br />
• Equip attendees with techniques to address some common challenges encountered in conducting research in regulatory, legislative, and administrative materials
<br />
• Enhance familiarity with secondary resources that can foster greater efficiency and productivity in tax research, including analytical, current awareness, and practical guidance materials available to attendees
<br />
• Focus awareness on recent tax developments incorporated in research hypotheticals and introduce methods that can assist practitioners in staying current with topics discussed

In today’s world, Google™, Bing™ or some other engine is used to search the Open Web to find information – whether for personal or professional reasons. Should we, as legal professionals, be using the Open Web to conduct research? What are the risks? And does reliance on such resources – with respect to both investigative and legal research – place practitioners at risk of violating ethical cannons such as Rule 1.1 of Competence? This seminar will review the duty of technological competence under Rule 1.1 and examine the benefits and risks for legal professionals in using the “Open Web” for investigative and legal research. Attendees will: •Understand the meaning and scope of the duty of technology competence and reviewinterpretive decisions. •Learn about the benefits and risks of using the “Open Web” for investigative and legalresearch. •Understand other potential consequences of using the “Open Web” for investigative andlegal research.
