October 23/Seattle: Burdens on Families and Children of U.S. Immigration Laws

Robert H. Gibbs
Although U.S. immigration laws place a strong emphasis on the principle of family unification, in practice there are substantial problems in keeping families together. Harsh criminal grounds of removal for minor offenses or offenses from years ago can lead to deportation of permanent resident parents of U.S. citizens. Limited options exist to obtain legal status for longtime immigrants, even those with U.S. citizen spouses and children without any criminal history. Increasing numbers of unaccompanied children are fleeing violence and turmoil in Mexico and Central America, but U.S. immigration laws provide few options for them to remain safely in the U.S.
This CLE will address the policy challenges and the problematic nature of U.S. immigration law.

November 13/Web: Recent Trends in FCPA Enforcement and Declinations #MCLE

Why has the federal government decided not to pursue certain cases involving alleged corruption by U.S. companies overseas? What additional guidance might companies expect from the government this year or next? And how might these developments guide companies in crafting or updating their best practices in conducting business globally?
These are among the questions that will be addressed in this webinar, prompted by recent developments such as the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) issuance of a series of “declinations” explaining why it decided not to pursue charges against several companies for alleged violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). These decisions provide much-needed explanations into what criteria the government uses in evaluating FCPA cases, criteria that can be translated into best practices.
Additionally, there have been rumors that in the coming months the DOJ will release long-awaited guidance that would explain its criteria in deciding whether or not to investigate a company.
Join us as we explore the DOJ’s explanations of its declinations in cases involving Morgan-Stanley, Oracle and others and how you can translate them into best practices for your compliance program. If your company does business worldwide, the insights shared on this program can help you avoid a costly DOJ investigation.

October 26/Seattle: Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project (#IRAP) #probono training #MCLE

The Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) seeks pro bono attorneys interested in providing legal representation to Iraqi refugees. Attorneys who register for this event in advance will be paired with a law student and the case that they will be working on, greatly increasing the educational value of this program!
Background:
IRAP is a student-driven organization with local chapters at Seattle University and the University of Washington Schools of Law, matching pairs of law students with pro bono supervising attorneys to provide legal representation to Iraqi refugees. IRAP cases range from Special Immigrant Visa applications for former US military interpreters to submitting Requests for Reconsideration to appeal denials from USCIS or UNHCR. While it is the primary responsibility of the student teams to research and draft documents, attorneys play a critical role in supervising, advising, and mentoring their student teams. Attorneys can estimate a time commitment of between 5-10 hours per month, with cases usually lasting between 3-6 months.
Please contact Arthur Delong, delonga1@seattleu.edu, to join this remarkable program!
