February 25: Ethical Legal Research With Generative AI

This CLE presentation is for legal professionals who want a better understanding of the intersection between generative Al and legal ethics.
Beginning with a foundational overview of Al and its generative capabilities, participants will explore the ethical implications as outlined by the American Bar Association (ABA) model rules. Key topics include maintaining competency (Rule 1.1), ensuring confidentiality (Rule 1.6), and effective supervision (Rule 5.1) in the context of Al use. The course will also address potential sanctions for unethical Al practices and provide insights into the application of Al in legal research tools, emphasizing ethical principles and considerations. 

Participants will engage in discussions on specific ethical issues such as Al hallucinations, supervisory concerns, and confidentiality challenges. The course concludes with a review of ethical Al use policies within law firms and an open discussion to consolidate learning and address participant queries. Since taking office on January 20, President Trump has issued a far-reaching series of executive orders targeting key areas of federal policy—from the legal profession and education to immigration and administrative governance.

Jim Hilbert is currently professor of law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law where he has taught full-time since 2010. He is the former interim president and dean (2023–24) and former vice dean (2020-2023) at the law school and currently also serves as Senior Fellow at the Dispute Resolution Institute. He teaches Transactions & Settlements, Civil Rights, Education Law, Expert Witness Advocacy, Deals & Dispute Resolution, and International Business Transactions. He is a long-time executive committee member of the St. Paul NAACP. He is also ad hoc counsel for the State NAACP. In addition, Professor Hilbert is the co-director of the Expert Witness Training Academy, which was funded by the National Science Foundation and provides training to climatologists on communicating in courtrooms and legislative hearings.

April 2: Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions - Advanced Session

This one-hour seminar assumes that attendees have a basic familiarity with the crim/imm concepts (ie: what is an aggravated felony) and dives into more advanced topics. We will review strategies that CA defense attorneys can use to avoid or mitigate the most severe immigration consequences. The seminar will also provide a brief update of new California and Federal laws impacting immigrants – such as Prop. 36 and the Laken Riley Act. Finally, the seminar will provide an overview of legal vehicles for post-conviction litigation in California that can mitigate or eliminate immigration consequences faced as a result of prior convictions.

March 26: Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions: 101 Basic Concepts

Description: This one-hour seminar will go over the fundamentals of immigration consequences of criminal convictions. This includes an overview of what types of consequences are triggered by criminal convictions, what types of consequences are triggered by other contact with the criminal legal system, what constitutes a “conviction” for immigration purposes, what information is needed to do a competent immigration consequences analysis, and the duties of California defense attorneys as far as investigating and advising on immigration matters. 

The seminar will provide a basic overview of the criminal grounds of inadmissibility as well as the criminal grounds of deportability and explain how advocates can determine which grounds may apply, and familiarize attendees with “crim/imm” terms such as “aggravated felony” and “crime involving moral turpitude.”

July 30: Medicare Updates And The Inflation Reduction Act Of 2022

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is the federal agency that provides health coverage to more than 160 million through Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program, and the Health Insurance Marketplace. CMS works in partnership with the entire health care community to improve quality, equity and outcomes in the health care system. 

This program will discuss an overview of Medicare and the expansions to Medicare under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The new drug law makes improvements to Medicare that will expand benefits, lower drug costs, keep prescription drug premiums stable, and improve the strength of the Medicare program. The law also extends enhanced financial help to purchase HealthCare.gov and state-based Marketplace plans and expands access to Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended vaccines for adults with Medicaid coverage. This program will also discuss recent CMS programmatic updates related to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

About the Speaker:
Brittany Rogers has devoted her career to representing plaintiffs in personal injury, products liability, and medical malpractice cases. She has experience in every aspect of civil litigation, from intake to trial, and has also written appellate briefs. She was recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star from 2021-2024 and has received awards from the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association as an Outstanding New Lawyer in 2018 and a Notable Achiever in 2021 for trying a fully virtual jury trial during COVID. June 12: Understanding Your Fiduciary Responsibilities Under ERISA

Strong fiduciary oversight and protecting workers’ benefits is one of the highest priorities of the U.S. Department of Labor. However, we recognize that understanding and complying with ERISA can be challenging for any employer, but especially so for small and medium sized employers with limited time, resources and/or access to professional assistance. This is a compliance assistance workshop for plan sponsors, advisers, human resources managers, and legal professionals. The Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) will present an introduction to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and cover some of the basics of retirement plan administration. This presentation will also include an overview of the Voluntary Fiduciary Correction Program (VFCP).

May 21: The Nuts and Bolts of Will Contests

Learn about will contests, including requirements for a valid will, proper timing, procedures, and grounds for contesting a will. Will contests can be emotional and dramatic, in and out of court. Although many California decedents use living trusts, and many do no estate planning at all, wills remain an important tool; and a complex network of statutes governs their validity, and the process by which they are admitted to probate, as well as the process for contesting them. 

This program will introduce the audience to the procedures and the substantive law concerning will contests. The educational objectives for this course will include being able to identify the requirements for a valid will, the proper timing and procedures for contesting a will, as well as general familiarity with the substantive grounds on which a will can be contested.
