A citizen-initiated attempt to convene a grand jury made the headlines recently. Allowed by a handful of states, this is a grand jury which has been convened based on a petition submitted by a citizen.
If you have never heard of the citizen-initiated grand jury (or even if you have), this CLE presentation is for you! After a brief background discussion of the concept of a grand jury, we will look at what is required under state laws to convene a citizen-initiated grand jury. We will discuss several cases in which citizens have petitioned for such a grand jury.
Additional material may be presented, time permitting.
