Noted civil liberties attorney, activist, and theorist Professor Ann Fagan Ginger is the founder and director of the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute in Berkeley. Her work in human rights law has developed during an extensive career, and includes rigorous analysis of the relationship between American law and international human rights standards.
 
An appreciation of the Constitutional Era of the United States, when the Founders recognized that the "continued existence of their new nation depended on other nations obeying customary international law"
 
The Meiklejohn Institute invites active participation of citizens and attorneys in its human rights reporting project. In another project, the Institute encourages citizens' groups to seek resolutions from their cities and towns which assert the role of international human rights standards, as applicable within the United States.
