January 7: Web - Tribal Law and Victims of Crime

William Mitchell College of Law Associate Professor Sarah Deer will discuss the high victimization rates of Native people, particularly violence against Native women, and the factors explaining the disproportionate amount of violence. Ms. Deer will explain the relevant laws and offer some suggestions for solutions.

Speaker:
Sarah Deer is an Associate Professor at William Mitchell College of Law. Ms. Deer brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her presentation. She is an Associate Justice on the Prairie Island Court of Appeals and a Citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Ms. Deer has authored articles, books, and reports on tribal law and Native American women. She serves on national task forces, has testified before Congress, and is the recipient of the National Sheila Wellstone award. Her advocacy work began when she served as a rape crisis volunteer in college.
