July 31: AI Compliance: What Do Enforcers and Legislators Care About?

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in legal practice and business operations, staying ahead of regulatory developments is essential. Participants will explore how the priorities of the current administration are reshaping the Federal Trade Commission’s enforcement strategies, with a focus on consumer protection, transparency, and fairness. We’ll examine recent Executive Orders and legislative proposals that signal a more laisse-faire federal posture on AI oversight.
At the state level, the session will highlight emerging legislative trends, including ethical AI development, responsible innovation frameworks, and efforts to harmonize regulations across jurisdictions. Attendees will gain practical insights into managing compliance in a fragmented regulatory environment.
We will also address one of the most pressing concerns for legal professionals: liability. Learn how to integrate AI into legal workflows while minimizing exposure to regulatory or civil risk. Topics include contractual safeguards, disclosure obligations, and risk assessment strategies tailored for legal practitioners.
Learning objectives include:
1. Changing Priorities Under the New Administration: Examine recent changes in the FTC’s enforcement priorities in prosecuting unfair and deceptive trade practices, as well as Executive Orders and legislative proposals.
2. Legislative Trends: Identify states’ and international priorities in regulating artificial intelligence, interstate cooperation efforts, key legislation, and best practices for managing compliance across state borders.
3. Liability Under AI Law: Learn strategies for safely integrating AI into legal workflows while minimizing exposure to regulatory or civil liability. Gain insights into contractual safeguards (e.g., client retention agreements), disclosure obligations, and risk assessment frameworks for AI adoption.
Who would benefit most from attending this program?
1. Lawyers and Legal Professionals (including In-House Counsel, Law Firm Attorneys, Ethics Counsel, and Compliance Officers) who need to understand AI’s impact on consumer law and privacy, as well as stay ahead of litigation trends involving AI systems.
2. Corporate Executives and General Counsel who are responsible for mitigating legal risks associated with AI adoption in their companies and ensuring AI compliance in areas such as HR, marketing, financial decision-making, and product development.
3. Risk Management and Compliance Officers who need to identify potential liability areas for AI use in business operations, particularly concerning discrimination, intellectual property, and fraud, and assist businesses in implementing AI policies that reduce exposure to legal claims.
4. Academics and Policy Makers who help shape AI governance, ethical guidelines, and regulatory approaches, and gain awareness of legal precedents and industry concerns shaping AI policy discussions.
5. Journalists Covering Law and Technology who report on AI-related litigation and regulatory developments and need expert insights on how courts and lawmakers are addressing AI risks.

July 31: Hybrid Construction Contract / Defect Claims Webinar

Description:
This presentation is a 'map of the terrain' for taming the beast of complexity that is hybrid (or combination) construction defect (CD) and construction contract claims. The program is for anyone who deals with these claims, including legal, insurance or construction professionals. These claims often span many years, include thousands of documents, and regularly involve dozens of parties. Making sense of this mess, and being able to explain it to everyone along the way, is where mastery begins.
CD and contract claims analysis used to be entirely different areas of expertise. Lawyers and consultants who worked in one area rarely crossed paths with their closely related, but long lost cousins in the "other world" of construction claims. No longer. The two are now often fully entangled.
Construction defects still need to be investigated, tested, analyzed issue-byissue, extrapolated (or not!), repairs specified, and repair costs evaluated. Contract claims for changes and delays still require expensive document analysis to compare what happened to what should have; how much was paid compared to how much should have been; how long the work took compared to how long it should have; and to evaluate the economic losses, liquidated and actual damages, that parties suffered.
These claims come in sizes and forms as widely varying as single-family residences, multifamily projects, mixed-use developments, commercial, institutional, industrial, low-rise, midrise, and high-rise construction; they range from incomplete projects that are years late and barely started, to projects that are completed and in operation. Since much of the audience is familiar with CD claims, we will more deeply explore contract claims.

November 18: Birthright Citizenship: A Candid Assessment of Wong Kim Ark and Its Modern-Day Implications

Wong Kim Ark was born in San Francisco in 1873 to parents who had emigrated to the United States from China. In 1894, he took a trip to China. When he returned to San Francisco a year later, he was denied reentry, as the authorities invoked the Chinese Exclusion Act. Wong argued that he could not be denied admission because he was born in this country and therefore was an American citizen. The Supreme Court ruled in Wong Kim Ark's favor, holding that, pursuant to the Fourteenth Amendment, Wong Kim Ark was a U.S. citizen, even though his parents were "subjects of the Emperor of China." On January 20, 2025, shortly after being sworn in, President Trump signed an Executive Order restricting birthright citizenship. Litigation immediately followed.
The Fourth Annual Fall Symposium of the Center on Asian Americans and the Law at Fordham Law School will present a two-part program on birthright citizenship. First, we will tell the story of Wong Kim Ark, a Chinese cook who took his case to the United States Supreme Court in 1898. Second, a distinguished panel will explore the issues presented by the recent Executive Order.

July 16: The Grieving Attorney: Navigating Loss with Competence and Compassion

We are lawyers, but we are also human and as such, are subject to all the range of experiences that all people face at some point in their lives. Grief is one such experience.
We may experience multiple types of loss over the course of our professional careers including the loss of health, a job, a marriage, and of those for whom we care, among many others.
This CLE discusses what and how we grieve together with the types of grief and the grief journey. This is approached through the lens of attorney ethics because grief can significantly affect our diligence, responsiveness, and client communication, to name just a few of attorneys' job responsibilities.
The applicable ethical rules will be discussed including ways to ethically navigate our many responsibilities as attorneys while grieving. We discuss why lawyers' grief may be compounded by the nature of our professional work and the unremitting demands that often accompany it. Finally, we'll discuss various ways we can hold space for that which we are grieving to give meaning to our changed circumstances.

November 14: Artificial Intelligence for Lawyers: Ethical Concerns and Best Practices

Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) and other emerging technologies, while holding the promise of helping lawyers serve their clients efficiently and effectively, can also raise many complex ethical issues. Although an attorney’s ethical obligations remain unchanged regardless of technology relied upon in practice, in certain respects, the current rules of professional conduct may not have entirely “caught up” with emerging AI technology.
This seminar will explore the evolution of tools leveraging AI in legal practice and will cover the ethical issues arising out of the use of AI in the practice of law. This seminar will focus on improving the ability of attorneys to understand Artificial Intelligence and the application of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct (the “Model Rules”) in leveraging Artificial Intelligence, with specific emphasis on the following:
  • Current trends in the legal industry and tools leveraging Artificial Intelligence;
  • An overview of Artificial Intelligence; and
  • Review and discussion on the Model Rules and their applicability to an attorney relying on or leveraging Artificial Intelligence in practice
