Software supply chains are increasingly complex and interdependent,
fueled to a significant degree by the abundance and quality of open
source code available. For example, in the mobile industry a typical
handset has hundreds of software components, many open source, that are
sourced and shared between a large ecosystem of suppliers. At the same
time, many suppliers, large and small, struggle with how to comply with
open source licenses.
The Linux Foundation, with support and participation from Black Duck Software and others, recently launched the Open Compliance Program and a new standardization effort, the Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX™), to address this issue.
