Oct 19/Web - Making International #Arbitration Suitable for the 21st Century

International arbitration faces numerous challenges, many of which stem from its success. Users complain about the time and cost involved in arbitration. Governments and investors wonder about the fairness of investor-state arbitration. Mr. Rivkin will explore the nature of these challenges and offer suggestions to improve the system to meet the demands of business in the 21st Century.

David W. Rivkin, a litigation partner in the New York and London offices of Debevoise & Plimpton, is Secretary-General of the International Bar Association and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He was appointed by the U.S. State and Commerce Departments to be a founding member of the North American Free Trade Agreement Advisory Committee on Private Commercial Disputes. He is also a member of the U.S. Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law. His memberships include the American Arbitration Association, World Intellectual Property Organization, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, Chinese International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, the Cairo Regional Arbitration Centre, the Fédération International de l’Automobile, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Mr. Rivkin has frequently written on international arbitration and litigation, including two books. He received his B.A. magna cum laude in history (1977) and his J.D. (1980) from Yale University. He was Law Clerk to the Honorable Luther M. Swygert, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
