May 28: The EU AI Act: Legal Impacts on U.S. Companies

The EU AI Act, which came into force in August 2024, represents a significant milestone in the European Union's efforts to regulate AI usage and enhance transparency. Although it is an EU regulation, its extraterritorial application means that U.S. companies deploying AI within the EU or offering AI-related services to EU customers must comply.
This webinar will explore the implications of the EU AI Act for U.S. businesses, focusing on key sectors such as healthcare, employment, financial transactions, litigation, and general corporate compliance.
This webinar will provide practical, real-world guidance on how U.S. businesses are responding to the EU AI Act. It will feature insights from companies actively implementing the law, including those that are part of the EU AI Pact.
Expert panelists will discuss the operational and legal challenges they’re facing, and the concrete steps they’re taking—from policy changes and compliance strategies to contract updates—to meet the Act’s requirements.
Join us to understand the nuances of the EU AI Act and learn how to position your company for compliance and success in this evolving regulatory landscape.
Learning objectives include:
  • Learn about key provisions of the EU AI Act, including the definition of an AI System, the risk-based approach to how AI Systems are categorized, and the obligations applicable to various operators engaged with an AI System based on their roles
  • Obtain actionable insights on how to advise clients on navigating compliance, based on the Act’s timelines, and position information technology and Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) teams to implement best practices when interacting with or building technology subject to the Act
  • Understand how complying with the Act can augment a company’s compliance efforts under existing international and U.S. frameworks for deploying responsible AI.
  • Learn from companies that are part of the EU AI Pact. Discover how they are integrating the Act into their daily operations, the lessons they have learned, and the strategies they have employed to navigate compliance challenges.
Who would benefit most from attending this program?
  • In-house and law firm attorneys who advise U.S. companies and product teams with a European footprint on AI governance and risk management.
  • Executives and counsel to any U.S. company tracking influential global policy relating to AI.
  • Corporate counsel and GRC teams that advise on AI risks relating to the use of any technology, including third-party technology.

June 19: Automation for the Reluctant Lawyer: No Jargon, No BS, Just Results

If you’ve ever been at your office drafting pleadings and watching the clock strike 10pm and thought, “there has to be a better way to do this,” you’re not alone. Many of us are drowning, and it’s hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel when our caseloads are ever increasing. This is exactly what automation is meant to alleviate for legal professionals.
In a nutshell, automation exists to help you eliminate repetitive tasks (think copying/pasting case captions, inserting the parties’ names in a final order, populating the cause number in a memo, assigning a deadline to a legal assistant, etc.). All of these tasks can add up and keep you from being able to leave the firm by 5pm. So, let’s forget the overcomplicated tech talk, and join attorney Jordan Turk as she takes you through a FREE CLE session designed for real lawyers with real caseloads, who need real solutions.
Come find out how your colleagues are harnessing the power of automation to get themselves more organized and more efficient so that they can spend more time actually working their cases.
‍In this free CLE webinar, you'll learn about:
  • Document Automation – how to generate routine legal documents (pleadings, briefs, memos, letters, etc.) in minutes
  • Workflow Automation – how to streamline law firm tasks (intake, case management, etc.) and never miss a deadline
  • Real-World Tools – the best automation tools for law firms, from simple template builders to AI-driven solutions
  • How to Get Started – Practical steps to start automating today, both with technology and manually.

Speaker:
Jordan Turk is a practicing attorney in Texas, and the Director of Attorney Education and Development at Smokeball. Her family law expertise includes complex property division and contentious custody cases, as well as appeals and prenuptial agreements. In addition to her family law practice, she’s passionate about legal technology and how it can revolutionize law firms.
Jordan graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Classics, History, and Religious Studies and then went on to attend the University of Arkansas School of Law to earn her J.D. After almost four years of practice with a high-asset family law firm in Houston (and after being frustrated at the lack of automation in her firm), she discovered the world of legal technology which ultimately brought her to Smokeball.
In Hacking Law Firm Success with Jordan Turk, she interviews law firm founders about how they grew and scaled their practices, as well as their ethos behind managing a firm.

May 22-23: Social Science and Civil Justice

Title:
The 31st Annual Clifford Symposium on Tort Law & Social Policy
Social Science and Civil Justice

Description:
For over a century, the social sciences and civil justice have influenced one another, fueling debates that drive innovation and expose systemic challenges. That conversation has produced new insights and procedures but also sharp criticism of the way lawyers have gone about their work and the way social scientists have conducted their assessments of the civil justice system. This year’s Clifford Symposium revisits a crucial topic—the influence, or absence thereof, of key social science insights on civil justice. The symposium will explore five key questions raised by social science scholarship. The first, and the original inspiration for this program, is the impact of the oeuvre of the late Daniel Kahneman, Nobel Prize winner in Economics. It will then turn to the work of another outstanding social scientist, Tom Tyler, whose insights about voice and legitimacy have had a profound influence on how we think about civil justice processes. The symposium will then consider what social science research might teach us about decision maker prejudice and bias, as well as how judges perform their assigned tasks. Finally, it will examine the integrity of social science research and its broader implications for the legal system
