Permanent guardianship is a frequently used permanency option which can provide stability for children in the neglect system as well as continuing contact with the biological family in many cases. This training will address the nuts and bolts of guardianship including, when guardianship is the best option, how to advise clients, how to prepare and file the guardianship motion, common legal issues, guardianship subsidy, litigating a contested guardianship, case law, what to do when a guardianship threatens to disrupt, and changes made by the new guardianship law. In addition to learning guardianship law and practice, you will hear from a guardian who selected this option to care for a child in the neglect system, and from a pro bono attorney who has represented several clients in guardianship matters.
