Rob Ruth writes:
"Registration is now open for the second 2011 Winning Strategies and Fundamentals Seminars. The seminar is in Indianapolis on June 9-11, 2011. Registration is open to all CJA panel attorneys. The seminar is also free, but space is limited.
Bob Burke, Training Branch Chief, describes the program as follows:
Winning Strategies provides attorneys with an array of continuing legal education topics central to the handling of federal criminal defense cases. The seminar employs plenary and break-out sessions on “nuts and bolts” defenses to firearms, drug, child pornography and immigration prosecutions, as well as more novel areas such as mortgage fraud, identity-theft, and more. Winning Strategies also provides guidance and insights to help practitioners safely navigate the post-Booker sentencing landscape. Also included is an analysis of the Supreme Court’s recent criminal law decisions and the Court’s pending criminal cases.
A separate program for new CJA panel attorneys, Fundamentals of Federal Criminal Defense Program, is also offered on June 9, 2011 during the Winning Strategies seiminar. The Fundamentals program offers sessions on topics that every new practitioner should master such as pre-trial detention, the federal rules of evidence, sentencing generally, and the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. After participating in the Fundamentals Program, attorneys are encouraged to participate in the remaining Winning Strategies sessions on Friday and Saturday.
Participants must register for these two programs separately, and limited financial assistance for travel costs is available. Registration and the financial assistance form are available at http://www.fd.org/. Here are links to the draft agendas for the Winning Strategiesprogram and the Fundamentals program.
