Ethical Issues in Social Media - On-Demand #MCLE

This webinar is designed to help lawyers and law firms understand the professional ethics rules and other state bar regulations governing the use of social media, with a special emphasis on the first amendment constraints around these rules and specific examples of the use (and misuse) of current social media platforms.
Topics will include:

  • Rules of Professional Conduct: The ABA model rules, state-specific examples, what they mean for online communications.
  • The Commercial Speech Doctrine: Understanding lawyer’s first amendment rights, and how the commercial speech doctrine defines how expansively attorney advertising regulations can be read.
  • Social Media: Social media (twitter, facebook, blogging, etc.) raises a host of issues with respect to advertising rules. Topics will include thoughts on ways to use these tools while still complying with advertising and solicitation rules.

July 18/Web: Sodium Reduction: The Efforts, Challenges and Successes of Policies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the U.S.

An estimated 68 million adults in the U.S. suffer from high blood pressure and approximately 2,200 die from cardiovascular disease each day, and according to the American Heart Association, a diet high in sodium may be a contributing factor. Ninety percent of Americans consume more than the recommended daily intake limit of 2,300 milligrams of sodium (about one teaspoon of salt) and typically consume upwards of 3,400 mg of sodium per day (1.5 teaspoons of salt). It’s also estimated that nearly 80 percent of the sodium in the American diet comes from restaurant and processed foods that do not always taste salty or are not commonly known for including salt. Researchers estimate that reducing daily sodium intake by 1,200 mg can prevent up to 92,000 deaths and save up to $24 billion in health care costs each year.
This webinar will address the importance of sodium reduction as a public health goal in the U.S., and highlight the regulatory and voluntary efforts of government and industry; provide insight on implementation issues from the regulatory aspect and the voluntary aspect; discuss the unintended consequences of these efforts and the challenge in finding the best solutions to reduce sodium intake; and discuss successes and best practices that have resulted in notable sodium reduction measures. Presenters for this webinar represent federal and local government regulatory and health agencies, as well as the food industry, and have been directly involved in encouraging sodium reduction as a public health target.
Each webinar is free and open to all interested parties. Register Now!

July 9/Seattle: Seeking Justice - The Impact of Prosecutorial Discretion in Juvenile Court and Beyond

Much research and attention has been directed towards reform in juvenile justice. Private foundations and government have poured millions of dollars into research and initiatives focused on reducing juvenile detention populations, addressing substance abuse and mental health needs of juvenile offenders, reducing disproportionate representation of youth of color, and improving reentry and transitions from incarceration to community. In Washington, we have made tremendous efforts to learn about new developments in law and science and use this information and data to make improvements in our justice system.
This conference came about through collaboration among TeamChild, the King County Prosecutor's Office and Seattle University law school.  Georgetown Professor Kristin Henning spurred the group to develop this CLE with her article on CRIMINALIZING NORMAL ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOR IN COMMUNITIES OF COLOR: THE ROLE OF PROSECUTORS IN JUVENILE JUSTICE REFORM.
We are thrilled to bring Professor Henning to Washington to talk about her work. In addition to Professor Henning, the presenters include Whitney Tymas, the Director of the Prosecution and Racial Justice Program at the Vera Institute for Justice, King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, State Supreme Court Justice Steven Gonzalez, State Representative Cyrus Habib, Attorney Jeff Robinson, and Carrie Cihak the Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives in the King County Executive’s Office.  There will also be a presentation featuring the 180 program, an innovative project of the King County Prosecutor’s office.
We hope the CLE will be a very interesting and innovative program that can inspire creative, bold and collaborative approaches to realizing a vision of justice that goes beyond individual roles as prosecutors, defenders and judges.  Preregister Now!

June 20/Web: Cisco and eBook Code of Conduct: A Discussion with Monica Bay #Ethics #MCLE

Monica Bay,
Editor-in-Chief,
Law Technology News
Robust ethics and compliance communication and training is a must have to ensure compliance with Chapter Eight of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The most recent guidelines from the DOJ on FCPA compliance specifically speak about sham programs and programs that fail to influence corporate cultures.
Cisco's unique approach and offerings specifically address these issues. Cisco, who just won LTN's Most Innovative Use of Technology in a Corporation, recently has created an eBook Code of Conduct.
This event's discussion will include best practices in legal training, imbedding technology into legal documents and training; tailoring governance documents and learning tools to your audience and how to turn static documents into dynamic decision making tools that get results and empower employees to conduct business ethically.
This event is part of the day-long Virtual Legal Techshow on June 20. I'm listing it separately because ethics is always a hot topic!

July 23/San Francisco: Introduction to Landlord Tenant Training

JDC's full scope Eviction Defense Project provides representation to clients during their eviction proceedings. These cases provide excellent litigation experience as the procedures are the same as those involved in business litigation-discovery, motions, settlement, and trial-on a more manageable level. Before you volunteer with this project, we ask that you attend this free MCLE training session.
This training will be given by JDC’s Supervising Attorney who will go over the volunteer procedures as well as the different types of cases we place with volunteers. The substantive portion of the training must be viewed ahead of time on the Practising Law Institute’s Web site. For more information on how to view this webcast and attend our live training, please email probono@sfbar.org. Pre-registration is required to attend.
