June 5: Webcast - Protecting Domestic Violence Survivors and Children in California: Pro Bono Representation in Low-Income Domestic Violence Restraining Order Cases 2015

Attend this program so that you can receive the training you need to represent low-income domestic violence survivors seeking domestic violence restraining orders in California, including crafting safe and effective child custody and visitation orders. Experienced attorneys will give you a practical training to enable you to obtain orders critical to protecting victims of abuse. A sitting judicial officer will give you the view from the bench on how these hearings proceed and pitfalls to avoid. These cases can often be handled in one or two hearings and make the essential difference in creating a safe and stable environment for the domestic violence survivor and family.
What You Will Learn
  • Domestic Violence 101 - definitions, cycle of violence, working with survivors
  • California Domestic Violence Prevention Act restraining orders - procedures, forms, and relief
  • How to prepare clients for child custody recommending counseling and understand the role of court-based "Family Court Services"
  • How to prepare for and appear on a domestic violence restraining order hearing, including asking for support and safe and enforceable custody/visitation orders
  • California law on domestic violence and related issues so that you can adequately issue spot and advise clients, including:
  • Domestic Violence Prevention Act,
  • California custody and visitation law - creating safe and enforceable child custody and visitation orders,
  • Housing protections,
  • Victims' rights in criminal proceedings,
  • Labor and employment rights,
  • Cyber abuse (e.g., social networking sites, texting, video sharing, blogs, and other virtual platforms), and
  • New cases
Who Should Attend: Any attorney interested in providing pro bono assistance to low-income domestic violence survivors. This is an updated training which has proved helpful to law firm pro bono coordinators, associates and partners, corporate counsel, judges, law students, and public interest and non-profit law firm attorneys and staff.
