Her talk will explore how academic autonomy has been challenged in Hungary’s electoral autocracy, the transformation of universities into politically influenced private institutions, and how student protest movements—such as FreeSZFE—have served as indicators of civil society’s resilience in the face of autocratization.

About the Speaker:
Eszter Kirs is an associate professor at the Corvinus University of Budapest whose research focuses on protest movements and human rights in illiberal political systems. She has lectured widely on international law and human rights and previously served as a legal officer with the Hungarian Helsinki Committee. Her professional background includes work with a defense team at the ICTY, a Fulbright visiting researcher position at Columbia Law School, and a visiting lectureship at the University of Minnesota Law School. She is the author of two monographs and numerous academic papers on transitional justice, international criminal law, and human rights, including recent publications on youth resistance movements and civil society in Hungary.
