January 22: Webcast - Managing I-9 Risk for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses

Small and medium-sized employers face special challenges in completing the Form I-9 and E-Verify process. Such employers frequently lack a dedicated HR professional or simply find themselves overwhelmed with the sheer volume of employment and HR-related paperwork. To make matters worse, studies have shown that small employers are more likely to be audited and fined by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for simple I-9 paperwork mistakes.
Is your organization a small or medium-size business with concerns surrounding I-9 compliance? Do you have an I-9 policy in place which addresses potential audit risks and penalty exposure?
LawLogix is pleased to present a free webinar on managing Form I-9 risk which is specifically tailored for small and medium sized businesses. Featuring immigration attorney and former senior trial specialist for the National Labor Relations Board, Bruce Buchanan from the law firm of Siskind Susser, P.C., this webinar will provide attendees with the following information:
  • Form I-9 risks for small businesses
  • Analysis of potential liability for I-9 mistakes
  • Benefits of engaging legal counsel in I-9 remediation and audit response
  • The most dangerous mistakes made in self-auditing I-9s
  • Essential elements for an I-9 compliance strategy
  • Considerations for small and medium-sized businesses in using an electronic I-9 system.

January 31: NYC - Voting Rights Litigation Training

The landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 is undoubtedly one of the most successful civil rights laws in our Nation’s history, and remains an important piece of national legislation that is still relevant today. However, the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Shelby County v. Holder effectively nullified the Act’s special preclearance provisions. As a result, until Congress amends the Act, voting rights litigation will be the only path available to minority voters seeking to protect their rights against discriminatory voting laws.
Help respond to this voting rights crisis by joining the American Constitution Society and the Campaign Legal Center in a half-day CLE training program, taught by some of the most respected voting rights practitioners in the country. This training will arm attendees with the tools and tips necessary to become active members of the voting rights bar, and will provide an opportunity for new and returning members of the voting rights community to meet and strategize about the challenges to come.

February 26: Cleveland - 21st Century Employment Discrimination: LGBT Employees and New Perspectives on Workplace Law

Suzanne B. Goldberg
As we recognize Title VII’s 50th anniversary, the time is ripe to take stock of employment discrimination law’s current reach and its prospects for the future. The experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees is an especially useful lens for this effort.
In part, employment discrimination has been persistent for LGBT individuals, as for many others, notwithstanding a growing number of civil rights protections, and we need to understand why. Also, the changing body of employment cases related to LGBT rights highlights both the contemporary challenges of bringing all kinds of run-of-the-mill discrimination cases and the promise for meaningful protection we can find in stereotyping jurisprudence. Importantly, too, LGBT employees are right in the midst of growing tensions between antidiscrimination law and religious liberties claims, and from this flash point we can see the major questions – if not yet the answers – that employment discrimination law is likely to face in the coming decade.

At Columbia, Goldberg also co-directs the Center for Gender & Sexuality Law and founded and directs the Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic, the first of its kind in the nation. Goldberg’s scholarship, which focuses on procedural and substantive barriers to equality, has won numerous awards. Her co-authored book, Strangers to the Law: Gay People on Trial, has been hailed for capturing the cultural, political and legal context of the gay rights movement in the 1990s through the lens of the Romer v. Evans trial. Goldberg was a senior attorney with Lambda Legal, an organization specializing in protecting the rights of LGBT individuals and people with HIV/AIDS. At Lambda, she worked extensively on employment, immigration, education, and family law matters, as well as on challenges to antigay amendments and sodomy laws.
