Law firms, in-house law departments, and their vendors continue to be targets for ransomware attacks. According to reports, a New York City law firm that represents high-profile entertainers recently fell victim to a ransomware attack and the cyberthieves threatened to publish almost 1TB of client data unless the firm pays a ransom. Cybercrime has increased dramatically during the pandemic and lawyers and their clients, many of whom are working remotely, without onsite IT departments and in locations less secure than their offices, are vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Topics:
  • What is ransomware?
  • Considerations for determining whether to pay the ransom
  • Factors to consider when deciding whether to involve law enforcement
  • Effective offline data backup to reduce the chances of backups encrypted as part of a ransomware attack
  • What the New York SHIELD Act’s cybersecurity provisions mean for lawyers and their clients.
