Join Brian Concannon Jr., director of the Joseph, Oregon-based Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti (IJDH) and coordinator of the Lawyers' Earthquake Response Network, as he discusses the international legal response to the earthquake in Haiti, including legal work conducted in both Haiti and the United States. Mr. Concannon will discuss how the extreme mortality of the earthquake is, to a large extent, the result of inadequate development of the rule of law in Haiti, and of international policies implemented by the Haitian government and the international community. He will also discuss both short-term efforts to enforce the rights of earthquake victims and longer-term efforts to build the stability necassary for Haiti to become less vulnerable to the next natural disaster. Attendees at the interesting CLE will gain an understanding of: * Expanding United States immigration opportunities for Haitians * The legal obligations of donor states under human rights law * Enforcing housing rights in Haiti * Enforcing the rights of internally displaced people in Haiti Title: "International Lawyers Responding to Haiti" When: Thursday, April 8, 2010 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Where: Offices of William Kastner Gibbs - Two Union Square 601 Union St., Ste. 4100, Seattle Sponsor: WSBA International Practice Section Cost: International Practice Section members - Free Law students - Free Non-International Practice Section members - $35 Registration: https://pro.wsba.org/forms/cle/N100408.asp Special Accomodations: Please contact Shazahd Qadri (sqadri@adorno.com).
