Drafting Declarations and Representing Unaccompanied Children on Appeals to the BIA
Date & Time:
December 10, 2026
December 10, 2026
12:00 PM – 1:30 PM PT
Description:
Unaccompanied children's cases have become a priority for this administration, resulting in many expedited asylum merits Individual Calendar Hearings (ICHs) in Immigration Court. We also anticipate USCIS expediting unaccompanied children's asylum interviews. Youth are often left with very little notice or time to prepare. We anticipate that most of these ICHs will result in asylum denials and the issuance of removal orders, and most of our clients will want to appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA). We believe that many of these youth cases will have strong arguments on appeal.

Northwest Immigrants Rights Project is seeking pro bono attorneys to represent these unaccompanied children on their BIA appeals and to help draft client declarations. This training is meant to recruit pro bono attorneys and to train them on how to file an appeal with the BIA, common appealable issues specific to children and youth clients, and best practices for declaration drafting.
