The ABA Children’s Immigration Law Academy (CILA) invites you to a webinar presentation During this webinar, CILA staff will explore the topic of integrating social services and legal teams at legal service providers and highlight findings from the soon to be released written resource, “Collaborative Efforts to Immigration Relief: A Call for Integration of Social Workers + Lawyers,” prepared by CILA consultant Yvonne Mendoza. The presenters will highlight some common challenges that arise with respect to duties of confidentiality and mandatory reporting requirements, as well as ways to navigate them.
This webinar is a great learning opportunity for organizations with established or new interdisciplinary programs, as well as those currently exploring the option of incorporating social services staff into their teams. You don’t have to be a lawyer to join the first-ever signature event on behalf of the American Bar Association (ABA), co-sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), to celebrate Native American Heritage Month in November. Join us as our esteemed panelists discuss the current status and resiliency of indigenous peoples in the United States and Canada. More importantly, the panelists will discuss what steps, laws, and policies can be taken to improve the lives of indigenous peoples in the United States and Canada. The panelists will compare and contrast the history, status and future of the First Nations People in Canada vs. American Indians and Alaska Natives in the United States. After the panel discussion, the audience will gain a high-level overview of the issues around indigenous populations, which we hope will lead to desire to learn more. Please join us for this engaging, informative, and entertaining panel.

September 1: Black Lives Matter (In Disasters, Too) – The Intersection of Race and Policy in Disasters

While disasters do not discriminate, recovery does. Studies show that communities of color struggle to recover long after the natural disaster is over. This webinar provides a historical context of how segregation and discrimination as well as policies such as redlining isolated communities of color and put them in areas more susceptible to natural disasters, and explores ways in which attendees can advocate for change in their communities through grassroots advocacy. The webinar also examines how restriction of movement during a public health emergency impacts communities of color, balancing privacy rights and the need for collecting and sharing data during COVID-19, and how protests of shelter in place executive orders and protests supporting the Black Lives Matter movement resulted in disparate treatment among minorities.

August 19: Valuing Speed: The Costs in Fairness, Accuracy & Money in Trying to Accelerate Executions

Long before COVID-19 ravaged the nation, the use of the death penalty has been on a downward trend for quite some time. This year, the use of the death penalty has reached a new low as governments faces practical challenges of COVID. In this webinar, our panelists will discuss how execution holds initially across the country and the widespread economic downturn in the United States have negatively impacted the use of the death penalty. Our panelists will also explore how the pandemic has affected capital litigation by threatening due process specifically at trial, in post-conviction, and in execution-date clemency proceedings, inhibiting the development of mitigation cases when attorneys and their aides and experts cannot work normally. Our panelists will unpack the controversy surrounding execution drug shortages. Ohio’s implementing a de facto moratorium on executions in light of the pandemic will be examined, and considered in the context of the state’s failure to implement the recommendations of an ABA assessment team and a commission created by the state government. In a further exploration of the many ways in which the death penalty system violates due process, a panelist will discuss a recent analysis of jury‘s roles in creating racist results.

May 20: Unsheltered at Home: COVID-19, Guns and Domestic Violence

The current pandemic has created a crisis for victims of domestic violence. National estimates suggest that rates of domestic violence have increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. Victims of domestic violence find themselves sheltering in place and unable to escape those that commit abuse against them.
This national crisis has limited access to some of the traditional support and assistance that victims could rely on, and provided more opportunity for abusers to cause harm behind closed doors.
This program will focus on victim safety, gun violence, access to courts and other issues relating to domestic violence and coronavirus. Best practices across the country will be highlighted and discussed.
