July 29: Sweeps & COVID-19: Organizing and Legal Strategies to Stop the Sweeps During and After the Pandemic

Outdoor encampments have grown along with the nation's affordable housing gap, and governments across the country routinely evict people from their encampments despite the lack of available housing or even any stable and safe place for them to go. These evictions - or "sweeps" - cause people to lose their access to private shelter and other personal property, including items necessary to protect life and health, such as medication and protective clothing. They also cause people to disperse to other outdoor locations or enter into congregate shelter facilities - both risk factors for the spread of the deadly coronavirus. Indeed, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has advised that governments not conduct sweeps unless individual housing units are available to the people living there. But, despite this public health guidance, many governments have not stopped the sweeps.
Join us as we discuss organizing and legal strategies for stopping the sweeps during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. You will learn about a new national campaign to stop the sweeps, House Keys Not Sweeps, launched by the Western Regional Advocacy Project. You will hear from organizers working as members of that campaign in cities around the country, and you will learn about legal strategies that can support that work.

July 1: Protecting Renters, Preventing Homelessness, & COVID-19

On July 1, rent will be due again for millions of Americans who have been laid off from their employment and are struggling to make ends meet. Eviction moratoria have provided temporary relief for some renters, but those limited protections are now expiring and renters are increasingly in danger of losing their homes. Without action, large increases in homelessness are likely.
This is why many in the homelessness sector are calling for #RentReliefNOW, to prevent a pandemic of evictions on top of the COVID pandemic. Because the unemployment crisis has disparately affected Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other communities of color, and because these communities make up a disproportionate number of renters, preventing eviction is a matter of racial justice as well.
Join us to learn how to prevent homelessness among renters during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. You will become familiar with existing tools and resources to protect at-risk renters, learn about current advocacy campaigns for federal, state, and local action, and hear what we can do collectively moving forward.
