September 15: 20 Years of the Global War on Terror: Minnesota’s Leadership Defending the Rule of Law

A “global war on terror” was waged in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Over these two decades, the U.S. and countries around the world have asserted exceptional powers to combat terrorism and skirt long-standing principles of democracy, human rights, and the fair administration of justice.
As we mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and in the context of events unfolding in Afghanistan, the Human Rights Center invites you to an online discussion reflecting on the diverse ways that Minnesota lawyers have been at the forefront of efforts to uphold the rule of law, safeguard human rights, and defend American values during the war on terror.
The event panel will include opening remarks by Garry Jenkins, Dean of the University of Minnesota Law School, a keynote presentation by Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, UN Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights, and a roundtable of attorneys involved in different litigation and advocacy efforts.

September 28: Combating Structural Racism: Organizational Equity Change

In 2020, our Washington Supreme Court called on the legal community to address the racial injustice that has for so long and continues to plague our country. Heeding the Court's call to action, we are offering a series of Legal Lunchbox CLEs focused on racial injustice. In March 2020, we began the conversation by giving an overview of structural racism in the law and how it impacts various client communities. In June 2020, we focused on how individuals can practice relationship- building and the shifting of power to begin to combat systemic racism.
This September, Ada Shen-Jaffe (JustLead WA), SaNni Lemonidis (Lemonidis Consulting and Law Group), and Jaelynn Scott (Lavender Rights Project) will present as we focus on organizational change. Various leaders of legal organizations will discuss different dimensions of equity work and how they intersect, how to and what they are doing to effect change at an organizational level including instituting combating racial bias and having more cultural humility amongst leaders, and centering the voices of client communities most impacted by racism while making organizational change.

September 15: Let’s Talk About Hiring and Terminating Employees

Few issues are more important to companies’ “bottom line” than having legally compliant best practices to navigate the complex rules of hiring and terminating employees. Legally compliant recruiting and hiring practices are crucial for companies to grow and move forward with their businesses, while avoiding exposure to claims related to their hiring practices. Pre-employment inquiries, advertising job openings, employment applications, and pre-employment reference and background checks are all potential sources of liability exposure. Likewise, legally compliant pre-termination and termination practices are crucial to companies’ businesses, and necessary for limiting exposure to wrongful claims. Employers terminate employees for a variety of reasons, including performance issues, employees not having appropriate skills, company lay-offs, and business closures. All of these scenarios create possible risks to companies and require different strategies to address them. For experienced human resources professionals, this webinar will be a practical “refresher.” For less experienced human resources professionals, this webinar will provide an introduction to, and real world advice for, best practices for hiring and terminating employees. Join Cozen O’Connor labor & employment attorneys to learn about the essentials when it comes to hiring and terminating employees.
This webinar continues Cozen O’Connor’s California Employment Law Essentials series for HR Professionals. Be on the lookout for details about this series and mark your calendars now for October 20, when we will look at what you need to know about compliance with wage and hour laws and best practices for California employers.
