June 27: Tax Research FAQs: Tips on the What, Where, and How of Locating Tax Authority

As a matter of law, ethics and professional responsibility, tax practitioners must ensure the research that supports their advice is thorough, accurate, and up-to-date. The process can be uniquely challenging, requiring researchers to navigate a vast and diverse array of sources of tax authority, while weighing the nuanced relationships among them. This interactive session will provide a review of key federal and state materials pertinent to the tax practitioner, along with a series of time-saving best practices that address frequently asked questions about how to locate them efficiently. The course will be customized to attendees’ level of experience and specialties, as applicable, and will engage participants to test their knowledge of lesser-known research pathways and details about various types of tax primary materials.
This program will:
• Increase facility in locating key federal and state tax materials, with reference to the hierarchy of tax authority, sources of official publication, and common tools provided by tax research services
• Equip attendees with techniques to address some common challenges encountered in conducting research in regulatory, legislative, and administrative materials
• Enhance familiarity with secondary resources that can foster greater efficiency and productivity in tax research, including analytical, current awareness, and practical guidance materials available to attendees
• Focus awareness on recent tax developments incorporated in research hypotheticals and introduce methods that can assist practitioners in staying current with topics discussed

In this seminar we will review:

April 20: Don’t Be ‘Socially’ Unacceptable: Ethical Issues with Social Media in Your Practice

Practicing law in the Digital Age is rife with ethical minefields. Changes to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct have ushered in new expectations as attorneys are now held to a higher standard of digital competence. Ethics opinions across the country are addressing issues like the limits of advising clients about what to “take down” from their Facebook pages, contact with witnesses via social media, and even researching the online profiles of prospective jurors.
Join speakers John Browning, J.D. and Sally Field, J.D. to discuss this ever-evolving topic. As a lawyer and the author of The Lawyer’s Guide to Social Media and two more books on social media and the law, John Browning has spent a great deal of time examining this issue and will offer some valuable insight into emerging issues. Sally Field is an attorney of more than 30 years and has spoken on numerous ethics topics over the years. She will offer attendees perspective on how the Model Rules of Professional Conduct translate to social media.

Alabama-Only Free CLE by 12/31/2021

According to an announcement on the Alabama State Bar Website:
"The MCLE Commission has temporarily suspended MCLE Regulation 3.1, which limits attorneys to six (6) hours of on-demand credits in any single CLE year. This accommodation allows Alabama attorneys the flexibility of satisfying their annual CLE requirement (12 hours, including 1 ethics hour) with approved on-demand courses. This only applies to the current CLE year, and attorneys must satisfy their annual CLE requirement by December 31, 2021.
In an effort to further assist Alabama attorneys during these difficult times, the Alabama State Bar is excited to offer a free online CLE platform called ProLearn. This platform is available to all active members of the Alabama State Bar and will offer enough on-demand CLE courses for members to satisfy their annual CLE requirement by the December 31st deadline."
