April 25: Web - Resisting Stigma by Asking for Help #MCLE

This month's legal lunchbox is part of our annual Work and Wellness Day in partnership with the WSBA's Lawyers Assistance Program.

Join presenter Wil Miller for a deeply personal and inspiring account of how he overcame the stigmas of: (1) being gay, (2) being a convicted felon, (3) being a recovered meth addict, and (4) being disbarred, while resurrecting his career as an attorney and being readmitted to the bar. It will include practical tips on reestablishing your reputation online, how to tell your story, and how to convince clients, bosses, judges and co-workers that your “stigmatized past” is actually a valuable asset, not something to hide or be ashamed of.

Frances Schopick, J.D., M.S.W., will then join Wil to facilitate a discussion of how sharing our dilemmas can help forge closer connections.
For this month's Legal Lunchbox, join our faculty for a conversation including the following topics: building a book of business, practice development and marketing, how to ask for help, staying professionally engaged and career development.

April 5: NYC - 2017 New York Spring Labor and Employment Seminar #MCLE

Employers are continuously faced with new and challenging issues. One significant area of current interest is how employers should deal with mental health issues that arise in the workplace. From employees who need accommodation for a variety of mental health challenges, to employees requesting leaves of absence, and to employees suspected of abusing drugs and alcohol at work, the issues are difficult and often fraught with legal peril. The EEOC recently issued an employee-friendly resource document highlighting its focus on this topic, explaining when mental health issues will be disabling and how far employers need go to accommodate these issues. Employers need to understand the breadth of their obligations when dealing with mental health issues, how to recognize and respond to substance abuse issues at work, and how to handle a variety of problems tied to mental health in general. Join us for an informative program that will:
  • Review the EEOC’s recent guidance document about mental health issues
  • Examine when mental health issues are disabilities
  • Help employers understand when they must accommodate mental health issues and the types of accommodations frequently used
  • Assist employers in dealing with substance abuse issues
  • Receive practical guidance regarding how to handle mental health challenges, including those involving workplace misconduct.

March 9: Webcast - Symposium on Policing in a New Political Era #MCLE

The strained relationship between police and communities of color is certainly not new, but has gained renewed attention due in part to several high-profile cases of police misconduct and the resulting public outcry. The Obama Administration responded to the crisis by investigating police departments accused of systematically failing to uphold the Constitution, sending mediators to communities in crisis, and establishing a Task Force to recommend best practices that maintain public safety while building public trust between communities and police. Now, after years in which the federal government took an active role in trying to address police misconduct and accountability, the Trump Administration has signaled a return to more traditional law and order policies.
Join ACS and New America on Thursday, March 9, for a symposium with a cross section of policing experts who will examine the current state of policing, the institutional and legal critiques central to the debate around police accountability, and the reforms that are needed and politically feasible to address police misconduct.

April 27: NYC - A Price Worth Paying?: Proactive Risk Management for Corporate Counsel #MCLE

Every day, we see reports of corporate activities morphing into full-blown, headline-grabbing crises. These events spawn a host of government and regulatory investigations, enforcement actions, and shareholder litigation. Using a proprietary film produced by Dechert LLP – “A Price Worth Paying?” – we will set the stage by going inside a fictional company, Maartel International, and dissecting how its corporate leaders created and attempted to address high-risk issues in the areas of setting executive compensation, conducting risk assessment and due diligence in M&A, and responding to serious whistleblower allegations. The film, packed with issues and designed to provoke lively debate, facilitates an interactive dialogue aimed at spotting hot topics and discussing how these corporate leaders failed to prevent and appropriately address these complex problems.
Following the presentation of “A Price Worth Paying?,” we will turn to our distinguished panel of national practitioners for a discussion of how the crisis at Maartel will play out in the real world of high-stakes civil, criminal and regulatory litigation. Our panel will discuss how to effectively defend these matters and, along the way, provide valuable insight on hot topics and trends in a wide array of areas, including:
  • Securities class action litigation
  • Derivative litigation against Ds & Os
  • The use of special committees and special litigation committees
  • DOJ investigations and criminal enforcement
  • SEC investigations and enforcement
  • Managing parallel civil and criminal matters
  • Managing cross-border investigations
  • Crisis management and PR
  • Key topics in the FCPA/anti-corruption
  • Insider-trading
  • Cyber-risk and data breaches

On Demand: The Buck Stops Here #MCLE

Like law firm attorneys, in-house counsel face many ethical and professionalism challenges in their daily practices. And like law firm attorneys, in-house counsel are subject to the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct. However many of the Rules often seem inapplicable to those practicing in-house. This online course seeks to bridge the gap between perception and reality, and answer ethical and professionalism questions in-house counsel face every day.

Who is the client? What determines “competence”? What to do when a CEO wants to violate the law? When can an attorney invest in his employer?

This online course answers these questions and others using three in-house counsel at various stages of their careers.

By the end of the course, attorneys will have (1) identified several Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct that delineate the responsibilities of in-house counsel, and (2) applied the Rules of Professional Conduct to novel ethical and professionalism situations.
