May 15: International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia 2024

In commemoration of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), The Advocates For Human Rights will be presenting No One Left Behind: Equality, Freedom, and Justice for All.
In this CLE, The Advocates will be joined by Dan Supalla—an attorney with Nilan Johnson Lewis who has represented LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers pro bono—and his former client from Uganda whose asylum claim was recently approved to discuss the intersection of LGBTIQ+ human rights and asylum law.
The CLE will cover the place of LGBTIQ+ human rights in international human rights law, global trends that drive LGBTIQ+ people to seek asylum outside of their home countries, the particular experiences and difficulties of being LGBTIQ+ in the U.S. asylum system, and best practices for lawyers interested in representing LGBTIQ+ asylum clients.

October 26: Exploitation and Trafficking in Forced Labor

The Advocates seeks to raise awareness of the options available for the many individuals who suffer exploitation and trafficking in forced labor. U.S. law provides some protections to noncitizen victims of labor trafficking through the T nonimmigrant status. During this one-hour CLE, you will learn the basics of T visa applications and working with trafficking survivors. We will identify issues that arise and how to ethically represent trafficking survivors. Participants should leave this training understanding how to analyze cases for potential T eligibility and begin handling trafficking cases. The Advocates expert staff will provide information about how to ethically handle T visa cases and potential issues that may arise for immigration practitioners handling other types of cases where individuals may be victims of trafficking. This will be the first in a series of CLEs focusing on immigration relief and victims of labor exploitation and trafficking.

May 25: The International Criminal Court and Ukraine: Documenting the Experiences of Women’s Human Rights Defenders

Join The Advocates for Human Rights to hear about our work to gather firsthand accounts of the experiences of women's human rights defenders in Ukraine. Before the war, these women worked as activists ending violence against women, stopping climate change, assisting homeless women, and other social justice issues. Today, they find themselves having narrowly escaped bombs, suffering, and death-and as survivors, they are ready to come forward and share what they survived. Through one-on-one conversations with The Advocates, we are collecting these activists' stories to send to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This presentation will present the history of the ICC, the basis of its jurisdiction, the procedures it follows, and the numerous other investigations that are underway, as well as share some of the accounts we are gathering from women and the war in Ukraine. Special thanks to Faegre Drinker for hosting this event. Read more about our work on Ukraine.
