August 15/Atlanta: Seeking Cloture: Is the Senate Filibuster Constitutional? #MCLE

Please join the Georgia Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society for a discussion between Emmet Bondurant and Professor Eric J. Segall on the constitutionality of the use of the filibuster in the United States Senate.  Mr. Bondurant will first present the legal basis for challenging the constitutionality of the filibuster.  Mr. Bondurant’s presentation will then be followed by a dialogue led by Professor Eric J. Segall, an expert in constitutional law.  Topics will include how the Federalist Papers would have envisioned the use of the filibuster, whether it has been used in recent years to subvert majority rule in the United States Senate; whether federal courts have the authority to strike down internal rules and procedures of Congress, and the merits of a legal attack on the filibuster’s constitutionality.
