This program will explore recreational standards within the industry. The difference between the "standard of care" and the "standard of practice" will be reviewed. The definition of a "standard" from the standpoint of the industry will be shared with the audience. The presenter will explore the types of playgrounds, athletics, physical education and recreation with regard to appropriate standards. Actual cases from the presenter's experience from over 300 cases will be utilized. Lastly, the presenter will examine how to support a case without the benefit of a published industry standard.

Over the last 18 years, Tom Bowler has served as an expert witness/consultant on over 300 cases for both plaintiff and defense attorneys throughout the United States. In 1966, Tom received his B.S. degree in physical education from the University of Connecticut. Tom taught elementary physical education for thirty-three years in Vernon, Connecticut. His credentials include high school coaching early in his career. He has been a director of intramurals and recreation at a Division III University. Tom was also an adjunct lecturer teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Lastly, Tom is credentialed by two recognized playground entities promoting playground safety. He is a Certified Playground Safety Inspector endorsed by the National Recreation and Park Association, and he is certified by the National Program for Playground Safety.
