The Civil Rights Act of 1964 turns 50 soon and its impact on the legal, education, economic and social systems in the United States has touched us all. Come celebrate this momentous law by looking at what life was like before its passage with the Honorable Lembhard G. Howell followed by a discussion of its current and future impact, and the reasons you practice civil rights law.

Lembhard G. Howell

Lembhard G. Howell is a prominent Seattle attorney practicing in Seattle since 1966. Howell’s career has been dedicated to seeking justice for individuals who have been injured and unfairly treated. Howell was the first African American to serve on the board of governors of the Association of Trial Lawyers.  In 1984 he was elected chairman of the Washington State Delegation to the Democratic National Convention.  He has also argued cases in the Washington Supreme Court and is admitted to the United States Supreme Court.
Howell is a founding member of the Loren Miller Bar Association (Washington State’s African American bar), a founding member of the Association of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, a life member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, an Eagle member of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, an advocate member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and a member of the Damage Attorneys Round Table.  Amongst Howell’s awards and honors are Trial Lawyer of the Year (1986) for the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association and Trial Lawyer of the Year (1994) for the American Board of Trial Advocates.  Howell is perennially listed in America’s Best Lawyers and as a “Super Lawyer” in Washington Law & Politics.
