January 27-30; Seattle - Judson Falknor Appellate Advocacy Competition #MCLE

The Judson Falknor Competition is open to second and third year students and provides them with the opportunity to practice their brief-writing and oral advocacy abilities. The competition features two preliminary rounds and three elimination rounds (quarterfinal, semifinal, and final). The problem this year involves Fifth and Eighth Amendment issues regarding a man who was convicted of making a bomb threat and has been subjected to solitary confinement.
Judging for a UWLS competition is an opportunity to provide law students with valuable feedback on their trial advocacy skills. Volunteer judges are also invaluable to the continued success of the Moot Court Honor Board and the in-house competition program.
As a judge in this competition, you provide feedback and evaluate the participants’ performance. Attorneys from all practice areas are welcome!
Each round of competition entails a time commitment of substantive work (training, listening to competition rounds, grading and delivering feedback) of approximately 3 to 3.5 hours.

•  Monday, January 27, 2014 (Preliminary Round 1) 5:30pm - 9:00pm
•  Tuesday, January 28, 2014 (Preliminary Round 2) 5:30pm - 9:00pm
•  Wednesday, January 29, 2014 (Quarterfinal Round) 5:30pm - 9:00pm
•  Thursday, January 30, 2014 (Semifinal Round) 5:30pm - 9:00pm.

Credit:

• 3 credits if you judge one round
• 5.5 credits if you judge a round in both competitions, because pre-competition training counts for .5 credits, but it is identical for both competitions, and so cannot be counted twice.
• APR 11.2 a(5) states " A lawyer may earn a maximum of six of the required credit hours for any reporting period for participation in law school competitions, moot court, or mock trials programs, as described in Regulation 103(g) of Appendix APR 11."

• Free.
• Free parking and a meal are provided.
