April 8: Cleveland - An Academic Conflict : Pharma's Increasing Influence on Medical Education #MCLE

The line between pharmaceutical public relations and medical education are blurring. Many might think that the biggest cost that a pharmaceutical company incurs is from the research and development that is needed to bring a new medication to market. To be sure, these costs are significant, often more than $1 billion dollars. But a recent British Medical Journal (BMJ) study unveiled a far greater cost. That study showed that pharmaceutical companies actually spend 19 times more on marketing and promotion than they do on research and development. Much of this cost is from direct marketing to physicians and physicians-in-training (medical students and residents) through small gifts like lunches, pens, prescription pads, samples, and continuing medical education credits. But while these gifts are seemingly nominal, the effects are not. Moreover, industry sponsored clinical research, comprising roughly 80% of all funded research, is increasingly influential on the way that physicians practice. But those studies are far more likely to have outcomes favoring the industry sponsor than studies with other sponsors. As a result, even “pharma” sponsored lunchtime lectures can greatly impact the prescribing patterns of physicians-in-training.

Nida F. Degesys is the National President of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), representing over 35,000 physicians-in-training. After graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Ohio University, she served in the United States Peace Corps as a community economic development volunteer in Panama where she helped a women’s cooperative gain sustainability and taught children oral hygiene and nutrition. She received her M.D. from Northeast Ohio Medical University where she was awarded Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) as well as Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) memberships.  Dr. Degesys served as AMSA’s National Secretary and Vice President for Internal Affairs, Nida prior to her Presidency. She also served as AMSA’s Chair of Medical Education when she developed a medical education leadership institute curriciulum “Teaching Tomorrow’s Teachers Today,” in Washington, D.C. In 2009-2010 she was the Education Coordinator for the committee on the culture of medicine where she lead a national study on medical student knowledge on patient safety . Dr. Degesys has presented her research on patient safety, students’ attitudes towards disabilities, and educational pedagogy both internationally and nationally which have won her several research awards.  Dr. Degesys was appointed by Governor Strickland of Ohio to serve as a Trustee on the Northeast Ohio Medical University Board of Trustees from 2010-2012. She is currently interviewing for emergency medicine residency.
