March 3: Cleveland - Posthumous Motherhood? Brain Death and Pregnancy

The recent case of the Texas woman who was 14 weeks pregnant when she was found unconscious on her kitchen floor raised a series of ethical and legal questions. Who should decide what happens in these cases-- the family, the hospital or the courts? Do laws about either surrogate decision making or brain death apply differently during pregnancy? If so, why?

Speakers:

  • Kavita Shah Arora, M.D., M.B.E. is an Assistant Professor of Reproductive Biology and Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University, as well as a practicing general obstetrician/gynecologist at MetroHealth Medical Center. She received her BS with a minor in Philosophy from the Pennsylvania State University. In 2009, she graduated with both an MD from Jefferson Medical College and a Master's Degreein Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in 2013. Dr. Arora is primarily based at MetroHealth Medical Center as a practicing general ob/gyn. She is an active member of the hospital's ethics committee. Her research interests include reproductive ethics, reproductive technology, perinatal decision making, conscience, HIV care in pregnancy, and feminist bioethics. She is also interested in medical education, especially with the intersection of ethics education.
  • Mark P. Aulisio, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Bioethics at Case, where he serves as Director of the Bioethics Ph.D. Program, and Director of the Center for Biomedical Ethics of the MetroHealth System. He has authored over 70 articles and book chapters on clinical bioethics, ethics consultation, organ donation and transplant, double effect and related areas and is a sought after speaker nationally and internationally. In 2009, Dr. Aulisio was honored with the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities’ (ASBH) Distinguished Service Award for having helped to lead three national projects that resulted in Core Competencies for Health Care Ethics Consultation (1998), Status of Bioethics and Medical Humanities Graduate Training Programs in the North America Report (2002), and Improving Competencies in Ethics Consultation: An Education Guide (2009) respectively. Dr. Aulisio also has extensive international bioethics experience which includes serving: as PI on clinical bioethics projects with colleagues at Kyoto University (2003-2004) and the University of Tokyo (2004-2006); as a co-investigator in University of Paris led 11 nation project on bioethics education (2006-2008); as co-investigator on a bioethics and citizenship project with Spanish colleagues at the University of Salamanca (2010-2011); and as a contributor to the Canadian Blood Services sponsored forum on the possibility of developing a National Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplant Program (2011).
  • Sheryl A. Kingsberg, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and a renowned sexual health expert. She is the chief of behavioral medicine at MacDonald Women’s Hospital/University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Professor in Reproductive Biology and Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University. Her areas of clinical specialization include sexual medicine, female sexual disorders, cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, menopause, pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, psychological aspects of infertility, and psychological and sexual aspects of cancer. Dr. Kingsberg’s primary research interests are in treatments for female sexual disorders and the psychological aspects of infertility and menopause. She has numerous publications in many national and international journals, and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Sexual Medicine and sits on the editorial board of the journal Menopause. She has also authored numerous book chapters on topics including perimenopause and sexuality, oocyte donation, infertility and aging, the treatment of psychogenic erectile dysfunction and sexuality after cancer.
