May 8: Seattle - Tribal Jurisdiction: Tribal Law and Order Act (2010) and Violence Against Women Act (2013)

In 2013 Congress passed legislation restoring tribal criminal jurisdiction over non-Indians who commit domestic violence crime within Indian reservations. The statute was passed after Congress reviewed extensive evidence of the epidemic of crime that was not being prosecuted by state or federal authorities. This presentation will explain the nature of tribal powers in the criminal law area, and their relationship to state and federal authority.
