May 12-15: Seattle - 2014 Hillis Clark Martin & Peterson 1L Appellate Advocacy Competition

Participate as a judge in the upcoming Hillis Clark Martin & Peterson 1L Appellate Advocacy Competition!
This year’s competition involves a criminal defendant alleging two violations of his Fifth Amendment rights.  First, he alleges a violation occurred when he was questioned about his cell phone during booking and prior to receiving his Miranda rights.  Second, the defendant challenges the District Court’s denial of his motion to quash a subpoena deuces tecum compelling him to decrypt laptop data.
As a judge, you provide feedback and evaluate the participants’ performance.  We will provide you with details regarding the problem and fact pattern in advance of the competition. Volunteer judges are invaluable to the continued success of the Moot Court Honor Board and the in-house competition program.
Each round of the competition entails a time commitment of substantive work (training, listening to competition rounds, grading and delivering feedback) of approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. WBSA regulations restrict the number of CLE credits you may receive for judging moot court competitions to 6 CLE credits per three-year reporting period.  Please note that you will receive 3 credits if you judge one round, but 5.5 if you judge two or more rounds. This is because pre-competition training counts for .5 credits, but it is identical each night, and so cannot be counted twice.
Judging for a UWLS competition is an opportunity to provide law students with valuable feedback on their trial advocacy skills. Volunteer judges are also invaluable to the continued success of the Moot Court Honor Board and the in-house competition program.
Mock Trial and Moot Court Competitions provide an invaluable service to students in preparing them to be better advocates, and they cannot be held without judges.
As a judge, you will provide feedback and evaluate the participants’ performance. Attorneys from all practice areas are welcome!
Seating is limited. Pre-registration required; register now!
