The Lawyers Fostering Independence (LFI) (part of the Center for Children & Youth Justice) program improves outcomes for youth transitioning out of the foster care system by arranging pro bono legal representation on civil legal problems.
Youth exiting the foster care system are highly vulnerable. Within three years of leaving foster care, one in five former foster children has experienced homelessness; one in four does not have a high school diploma; one in three have been incarcerated; and one in two is unemployed. These poor outcomes are often as a result of legal barriers that could be resolved with the assistance of legal counsel. The LFI program aims to fill the gap.
An LFI volunteer can help a former foster youth seal his juvenile record so he can get a job, or help a youth clear her credit report of identity theft so she can rent an apartment. Pro bono counsel receive training, free CLE credits, and are supported by a staff attorney and expert mentors. The level of volunteer commitment is flexible, and the variety of issues the program handles means that attorneys can choose cases that will develop their skills in negotiation, court appearances, and client counseling.
