While mediating, we often encounter parts of participants' personalities, lives, and cultures that are not readily accessible by looking at them or even through initial relationship building. And, despite our well-crafted questions or our desire for genuine conversation, it is only the organic and dynamic nature of the negotiation process that reveals to us the considerations of dealing with parties that are hidden from view. How do we handle these conversational icebergs and how can they help us, rather than sink us, in mediation?
