This program will discuss recent state and federal legislative and executive attempts to deal with gun violence, including regulation of the firearms industry, individual carry limitations, and other proposals to prevent mass shootings and urban gun violence.

Speakers:
  • Heather Martens, Executive Director, Protect Minnesota: Heather Martens has been working with Protect Minnesota and its predecessor organizations, Citizens for a Safer Minnesota and the Million Mom March Minnesota chapter since 2003. She is the chief lobbyist for Protect Minnesota and well-known for her work on gun violence. A graduate of Cornell University, she also has a master’s degree in education from Rutgers University. Before she became executive director of Citizens for a Safer Minnesota in 2009, she worked as a writer, researcher, newspaper reporter, and middle school teacher.
  • Joseph Olson, Professor of Law, Hamline School of Law:Professor Olson is the president of the Gun Owners’ Civil Rights Alliance of Minnesota and Academics for the Second Amendment, and has served on the board of directors of the National Rifle Association. He is also a leading authority on tax and business law, particularly the Minnesota Business Corporation Act, securities dealer-client and manufacturer-distributor issues. He is a graduate of Duke Law School, a former member of the Dorsey and Whitney Firm, and a former Air Force officer for the Judge Advocate General.
  • Charles Reid, Professor of Law, University of St. Thomas Law School: Professor Reid is a legal historian and jurisprudential scholar, having worked on issues such as nuclear arms, individual rights in western thought, canon law, John Noonan’s theory of natural law, and liberty of conscience. He blogs for the Huffington Post. After earning his JD at Catholic University and his PhD in the history of medieval law at Cornell, Reid served as research associate at Emory Law School before coming to St. Thomas.
