August 15/Web: Ethics Issues in Pro Bono Practice
The American Bar Association Center for Pro Bono will be hosting a free webinar entitled Ethics Issues in Pro Bono Practice on Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm Eastern.
A wide range of ethical issues can arise in pro bono practice, just as in fee billable work. While the Model Rules of Professional Conduct can be helpful in defining and addressing the scope of an attorney's duties and responsibilities, many kinds of unpredictable situations can arise. For example, what issues arise when pro bono counsel and legal services staff attorneys disagree on the goals or process for properly representing a client?
This event is free with pre-registration, but space is limited. To register, e-mail Karen Cain (karen.cain@americanbar.org) with your contact information & state bar number.

Tax, Credit and Other Financial Consequences of Foreclosures, Short Sales and Mortgage Loan Principal Forgiveness - Free On-Demand #MCLE
This training will help improve your ability to counsel homeowners in financial distress. The training will provide an overview of the financial issues - including tax and credit consequences - homeowners may face after a foreclosure, short sale or loan modification. Tax experts will explain the fundamentals of how cancelled mortgage debt is treated under state and federal tax law, and provide insights into changes in tax law that may take effect as early as next year. Practitioners will discuss what types of personal liability homeowners may still face following a foreclosure, short sale or deed-in-lieu, and will use case examples to illustrate the credit impact of various forms of mortgage delinquency resolution. Panelists will also outline legal strategies for addressing these issues through bankruptcy, fair debt collections and fair credit reporting claims.

August 16/San Francisco + Web: Re-Entry Issues: Overcoming Employment and Housing Challenges Due to a Prior Arrest or Conviction
In the past three decades, incarceration rates have exploded in the U.S., such that today we incarcerate over two million people, more than any other country in the world. The result is that many more people encounter the criminal justice system at some point in their lives. Indeed, an estimated 1 in 4 adults in California has an arrest or conviction record, and people of color are disproportionately affected.
A person with a prior record faces significant employment and housing barriers, even when the record is old or unrelated to the job or housing. These barriers impede community reintegration and prevent formerly incarcerated people from being able to support themselves and their families or contribute to their communities. This training is designed to give lawyers a foundation in the collateral consequences that result from contact with the criminal justice system, as well as tools for representing clients in need of reentry legal services.
What you will learn:

July 31/Web: An Introduction to Open Source Software and Licensing
Open source software (OSS) is an important part of mainstream software development organizations. Active OSS use in development can drive down costs, speed time to market and increase software functionality, all without adding to the bottom line.
And yet, even as it has become mainstream, OSS is often misunderstood by legal professionals. As Mark Driver, Gartner Group’s lead analyst for OSS, says: “Open source is ubiquitous, it’s unavoidable….having a policy against open source is impractical and places you at a competitive disadvantage.” With over two thousand different licenses in use today, it can be difficult to properly manage open source and ensure compliance.
In this webinar, top open source legal experts Karen Copenhaver (Partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart and Counsel for the Linux Foundation) and Mark Radcliffe (Partner at DLA Piper and General Counsel for the Open Source Initiative) will cover:

July 23/Web: The Many Faces of Technology-Assisted Review
Escalating data volumes have forced law firms and corporate legal teams to rethink how they perform eDiscovery. Most have found that the sheer volume, in some matters, requires the case team to leverage advanced technology to accelerate document review.

Join HP Autonomy, a pioneer in this market, as we:
Break down the various forms of Technology-Assisted Review
Discuss how to choose the right version for your specific matter
Outline some best practices to help ensure optimal results
