Please join the Pittsburgh Lawyer Chapter as professors Mark Tushnet and Jules Lobel preview the Supreme Court’s upcoming October Term 2013. Last term, the Court handed down some of the most important judicial decisions of the last half century and this term promises to be no different, with a host of cases touching on a range of critical legal questions including campaign contribution laws (McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission), the intersection of the First Amendment and reproductive clinics (McCullen v. Coakley), the recess appointment power of the president (National Labor Relations Board v. Noel Canning), and many others. Professors Tushnet and Lobel are both highly qualified to discuss the Court’s new term. A former law clerk to Justice Thurgood Marshall, Professor Tushnet is prominent constitutional law scholar who has extensively researched constitutional history. His most recent work, In the Balance: Law and Politics on the Roberts Court, provides an insight into the struggle between conservatives and liberals on the Supreme Court and what it means for everyday Americans. November 19: San Francisco - Housing Negotiation Project Training

JDC's Housing Negotiation Project is a limited-scope project providing representation to individuals and families facing eviction. Representation is limited to settlement conferences only. HNP is the first pro bono project of its kind, and is a project in which every single person in need of representation has a pro bono attorney. Volunteer shifts are Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m. During one shift, a volunteer will represent one to three clients. It is an excellent opportunity to get valuable negotiation experience without a large time commitment. Volunteers must attend our free CLE training before volunteering for this project. November 20: San Francisco - Introduction to Family Law Training #MCLE

BASF's Family Law Project assists individuals, families with children or families with domestic violence in matters including marital dissolutions, child custody, child support, restraining orders, guardianships, conservatorships, wills, powers of attorney and probate litigation. This is a full-scope project in which the volunteer can take the case from start to finish. Depending on the circumstances of each case, cases can last for weeks, months or even years.
This training will be given by JDC’s Supervising Attorneys who will go over the volunteer procedures as well as the forms for completing a simple divorce.
