March 11: Conflict of Interest? Spotting Conflicts Before They Spot You
Conflict of Interest? Spotting Conflicts Before They Spot You
Description:
Year after year, conflicts of interest top the list as the most frequently alleged legal malpractice error. Despite lawyers’ best efforts to identify and avoid (or remedy) conflicts, they continue to challenge lawyers who feel the tension between maintaining current client relationships and securing new business.
Because conflicts can arise in various scenarios and even develop during the course of representation, it is critical that lawyers understand how to quickly spot and address conflicts. Speakers J. Calhoun Watson, Managing Member at Robinson Gray, and Kate Gould, Risk Management Attorney at Attorney Protective, will discuss the Rules of Professional Conduct concerning conflicts, examine several conflict of interest case studies, and advise how you should handle them.
By analyzing real-world examples of potential conflicts, you will be better equipped to determine whether a conflict exists and what actions you should take to address the conflict. Lawyers of all levels of experience will benefit from this informative, ethics-focused legal malpractice webinar on conflict of interest risk management.

April 29: From Isolation to Connection: Supporting Mental Health in the Legal Profession
April 29: From Isolation to Connection: Supporting Mental Health in the Legal Profession
This webinar, From Isolation to Connection: Supporting Mental Health in the Legal Profession, is designed to help attorneys understand how isolation and loneliness in legal practice intersect with mental health challenges, including substance use disorder, depression, and anxiety. Building on the 2023 U.S. Surgeon General advisory that identified loneliness and isolation as an urgent public health challenge, the program focuses on how legal work structures can either support or undermine attorney well-being.
The course examines how colleagues, firm co-workers, professional organizations, and the broader legal community shape social connection and disconnection. It highlights how poor or insufficient social connection is associated with increased risk of anxiety, depression, substance use disorder, and suicide, and explains why legal practice is often described as the “loneliest” type of work—placing lawyers at heightened risk for problematic drinking, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and chronic stress.
The program also explores traits common in lawyers that can fuel isolation and impair resilience, and it connects these dynamics to ethics, impairment, and attorney discipline. Finally, it offers practical strategies and resources to build healthier professional and personal connections, including consultation with Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (LCL), employee assistance programs (EAPs), and other support services.

June 25: Researching Experts and Judges
Researching Experts and Judges is a litigation-focused CLE that shows trial lawyers and litigation teams how to use online resources to investigate judges and expert witnesses. This seminar explores practical techniques and research workflows that help you:
- Identify and evaluate judges’ preferences, prior rulings, and case histories to better anticipate how they may handle key issues.
- Investigate experts on both sides of a matter, including credentials, prior testimony, publications, and potential challenges.
- Leverage a range of online tools and litigation analytics to gather actionable intelligence on the individuals who influence your cases.
- Incorporate judge and expert research into your trial preparation, motion practice, and overall litigation strategy.
- Understand what resources are available so that, even if you are not the one conducting the research, you can ask for and use this information effectively.

May 28: The Expert Role in the Property Claim Appraisal Process
Property insurance policies almost always contain an “Appraisal Clause,” a key mechanism for resolving disputes about the amount of loss without resorting to costly litigation. While intended as a faster and less formal alternative dispute resolution process, appraisal still demands strict ethical standards to ensure that any award is binding and enforceable.
This free 1-hour webinar explores the expert’s role in the property claim appraisal process, with a focus on Insurance Appraisal and Umpire Association (IAUA) certifications and codes of ethics. Attendees will learn how IAUA guidance transforms appraisal from a casual negotiation into a rigorous professional proceeding, including rules on “ex parte” communications, handling causation issues, and using the Universal Appraisal Award Form to secure a durable resolution.

Key topics include:
- The evolution of the duty of competence to include technological competence.
- Ethical obligations when using common tools such as email, document software, and cloud services.
- Risks and responsibilities associated with artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
