October 23, 26+31: Breached! Cybersecurity 101

With data security incidents and data breaches happening daily, it’s important for attorneys to turn towards one reality—it’s NOT IF a breach or incident will occur—it’s WHEN.
These incidents are forcing government agencies, companies, law firms, etc. to address, define, and handle these challenges. As cloud technology and big-data analytics have become the norm, cybersecurity risks have increased and it is more important than ever to have both an avoidance and a response plan in place.
During this 60-minute CLE session, we will cover
(1) the latest security threats in the news and what’s being done to address/remedy them,
(2) explore current data breach laws,
(3) the roles and responsibilities of government agencies, and
(4) how to prepare a data breach avoidance plan as well as a data breach response plan.
After completing this course, you will be able to:
  • Know the latest cybersecurity threats the U.S. is facing;
  • Understand the different roles and responsibilities of various agencies;
  • What the legal framework surrounding data breaches look like?
  • How both government entities and companies across the globe have been impacted by cyber breaches; and
  • How to prepare both a “data breach avoidance plan” as well as a “data breach response plan.”

February 22: AI Trends, Practical Uses and Policies for the Modern Law Firm

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly changing the legal landscape. The once-distant sci-fi fever dream is now a tangible reality, and it is set to change the way we practice law. If you’ve been wondering how attorneys are actually using AI, and the types of policies being drafted around firms who are using it, this CLE is for you.
AI is being talked about a lot in legal circles, but few attorneys are being given actual examples of the tools that can - and will - directly impact their practices. What’s more, some of these tools already exist within your current technology setup; you just have to enable them.
Join experts Carolyn Elefant, attorney and founder of MyShingle.com, and attorney Jordan Turk, as they discuss what AI actually looks like in the legal realm, as well as pitfalls to avoid as you navigate this new legal landscape. This CLE will give you tangible, actionable items you can take with you and implement into your practice.
In this free CLE webinar, you’ll:
  • Important AI trends to consider in the legal field, as found in Smokeball’s State of Law Report
  • How legal professionals are harnessing AI in their firms
  • Best practices for actually utilizing AI in your practice and tech stack
  • Example policies and procedures surrounding proper use of AI.

October 19: False Claims Act Enforcement: Exploring Recent Trends and Developments

The False Claims Act (FCA) is a powerful fraud prevention tool for the government. The heightened crackdown and stringent statutory penalties and damages signal serious risks for companies with business transactions with the government. Failure to comply with regulations can lead to high stake mishaps such as reputational harm and debarment from government programs on top of financial liabilities. As aggressive FCA enforcement is here to stay, prudent businesses engaged with the government should map an effective defense and compliance program to avoid legal liabilities and hefty fines.
Listen as Stefan Boedeker of Berkeley Research Group and Julia Clayton of London & Stout P.C. provide the audience with a comprehensive discussion of the recent trends and developments in FCA enforcement. Speakers will also offer best practices to respond to FCA investigation and get out of potential exposure.
Key topics include:
  • Recent FCA Enforcement Activities
  • Significant Court Decisions
  • Best Defenses to Prevent FCA Liability
  • How to Stay Compliant
  • How to Prepare for What’s Next in FCA Enforcement
