July 25: Educating Peace through Law: TWAIL-ing the Peace Brigades International

Please join us on Monday, July 25, 2022 as Dr. Thamil Ananthavinayagan of the University of Nottingham (UK) School of Law, describes his experience with the legal and practical problems in providing protective, non-violent accompaniment to members of organizations threatened by political violence. 
Being the chairperson of the Irish Section of PBI (Peace Brigades International - a non-partisan, non-governmental organization founded in 1981 to protect human rights and promote non-violent transformation of conflicts) since 2021, he will use his academic scholarship - the Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) - to sketch and explain the necessity of diverse approaches to human rights to disrupt conflicts and pave the way to peace through law

Dr. Ananthavinayagan Thamil has taught widely in subjects in relation to international human rights law, international humanitarian law, transitional justice, conflict resolution, business and human rights, refugee law and public international law et al. At University of Nottingham he teaches European Convention on Human Rights, International Human Rights Law and UK Public Law. He continues to be a panel member to the International Protection Office, Department of Justice (Republic of Ireland); previously he worked as a Fellow and research assistant to the Irish Centre for Human Rights in Galway, Ireland. He is the author of “Sri Lanka, Human Rights, and the United Nations” [2019, ISBN 9789811373497] and is working on his second book, 'Taming the Beast', on Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL).
