This CLE describes the history of western science and colonial environmentalism as it influences environmental and natural resource law, and describes environmental justice, Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), and Indigenous Knowledges (IK). The speakers will discuss current environmental justice practice in Washington State and explain the FPIC process, highlighting how it functions in the practice of environmental justice to support Indigenous Peoples’ rights. They will describe how FPIC protects cultural practitioners and intellectual properties like IK and will explain how these approaches provide a vital resource for understanding and engaging with the environment. Speakers bring combined expertise in the practice of law and policy, and the fields of biological science and cultural and natural resources.
