October 14: Unmasking the Financialization of Healthcare with Jacqueline Fox

Financialization of healthcare drains our current system of resources it needs to provide care. It occurs when money is siphoned off for private profit through mechanisms such as rent seeking, gamesmanship, and exploitative price setting. 

This is not an ethically neutral activity, and the people profiting in this way ought to justify why they are entitled to this money, given the foreseeable negative effects what they are doing has on people’s health. This important problem is masked by current accounting methods and healthcare billing methods, which need to be changed to allow for a more transparent assessment of what is really occurring.

Jacqueline Fox teaches Health Care Law and Policy, Public Health Law, Bioethics, and Torts. She has published numerous articles on health law, health care financing and regulation, and health care reform in publications including the University of Cincinnati Law Review, Buffalo Law Review, Seton Hall Law Review, the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics, the International Journal of Healthcare Technology and Management, and The Hasting Center's Health Care Cost Monitor. Her current work closely examines the newly created Independent Payment Advisory Board, which is tasked with capping the costs of the Medicare program. She has published op-ed pieces in The State newspaper and appeared on local and regional news shows speaking on the subject of health law. Her work on Medicare, in particular, has been cited in a number of scholarly publications and one of her contributions to the Hastings Center health reform publications has been the subject of an article in the New York Times. She has also been an invited speaker at universities including Oxford University, the University of Toronto, Johns Hopkins University, and Yale University. She was a visiting professor at the Santa Anna University in Pisa, Italy, for the spring semester of 2009. Fox received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and J.D. and LL.M. from Georgetown University. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of South Carolina, she was a Greenwall Fellow at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities, and a Donaghue Scholar of Research Ethics at Yale University.

Please join the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies-California (CGRS-CA) and Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS) on a training about working with Ukrainian refugees. This training will equip legal practitioners with culturally competent, trauma-informed tools to improve legal outcomes and client trust for Ukrainians and Russian-speaking asylum seekers affected by war.

In the December 2023 Canadian ruling of Bjorkquist et al. v. Attorney General of Canada, the definition of who is entitled to Canadian citizenship by descent was deemed unconstitutional. Since then, the Canadian government has put measures into place allowing many individuals with Canadian ancestry to confirm their citizenship status--even after several generations in the United States. 

These measures have far-reaching implications for businesses whose employees may have claims to Canadian citizenship, families, and individuals contemplating a move to Canada or who wish to obtain a Canadian passport.
