July 20: Construction Site Accident Claims 101

It is no secret that a construction site is not a playground. Few places are more potentially dangerous; the list of safety regulations goes on and on to safeguard the wellbeing of construction professionals. Still, humans are flawed and prone to error, with three construction site fatalities and hundreds of injuries each day here in the US.
When these accidents happen, the companies involved are obligated to step in and investigate the details, rendering a thoughtful opinion about the facts surrounding the accident. No two claims are the same. Our analytical method walks through a professional investigation and analysis regardless of the specifics of the claim, like how the scientific method aids in discovery of the workings of our natural world.
Anyone who works with construction of any kind has an interest in being prepared for construction site accident claims and knowing how to handle them effectively. Insurance professionals need to know how to investigate a claim fairly and thoroughly with the full context of construction site safety standards. Legal professionals need the specific knowledge necessary to best represent their clients. Construction professionals should be aware of the process involved in an investigation.

October 18: Leveraging Technology to Prepare Briefs with Greater Efficiency and Accuracy

This course focuses on the importance of accuracy and efficiency in the review and preparation of briefs and motions. In particular, it stresses an attorney’s duty of competence, which includes an obligation to accurately cite and quote legal authorities in the briefs presented to the courts, as well as the duty to cite only valid legal authorities and to disclose adverse authorities. Additionally, it addresses the duty lawyers owe to their clients to work as efficiently as possible in the preparation of briefs and motions, which includes a concomitant obligation to leverage available technologies to assist in performing these tasks. Ultimately, the course illuminates the legal technologies currently available to assist lawyers with reviewing and preparing briefs accurately and efficiently.

July 1: The Little Engine That Could! Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Founding of the UN Special Court for Sierra Leone

A little over 20 years ago, the international community answered the call for justice by the people of Sierra Leone and West Africa by creating the world’s first international hybrid war crimes tribunal. Armed with a workable mandate, the Special Court for Sierra Leone achieved justice for the murder, rape, maiming and mutilation of over one million people. and took down a sitting head of state for international crimes, President Charles Taylor of Liberia.

The jurisprudence that was achieved during the three joint criminal trials of those who bore the greatest responsibility for international crimes, advanced the ability of future local, regional, and international prosecutors to account for atrocity crimes. 

Join a roundtable discussion, moderated by Dean Michael Scharf of Case Western University School of Law, with those individuals who created, sustained, and accomplished that justice for the people of Sierra Leone. For all its hard work, against tremendous odds, the Special Court earned the title of “The Little Engine That Could”.

The program will be presented by Daniel N. Rosen, a Minneapolis lawyer in practice for 28 years. He was appointed to the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board in 2014 by Governor Dayton and served two terms on the board, through 2021. He chaired the Board from 2016 to 2018. Since leaving the board he has represented candidates in connection with campaign finance matters. He is a 1994 graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School. Before law school, he served as an officer in the United States Navy.
