June 22/Seattle: Storytelling and Statistics: Achieving Justice for Our Defender and Civil Legal Aid Clients

As public defenders and civil legal service attorneys, we know and understand our clients. Learning how to tell their stories to others helps us win our cases and achieve better outcomes for our clients. This program focuses on storytelling: the importance of it and the skills behind it. We will also talk about how social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology and economics) can be powerful tools at trial and in negotiation.
Who May Attend:
This training is offered at no charge to members of the Washington Defender  Association, civil legal services attorneys,  select pro bono attorneys and law students.

Speakers:
  • Bill Bailey, author of “Show the Story: The Power of Visual Advocacy”, will lead the morning sessions, focusing on how to effectively tell your client’s story. William has combined a career as a criminal and civil trial practitioner with legal scholarship and teaching. Long interested in research on behavioral psychology, communication strategy and brain function, his research and writing have focused on the use of images, words and stories to influence thought and decisions.
  • Colette Tvedt will provide a practical discussion of how she has used the science underlying identification evidence effectively to win her cases and how you can use your knowledge of social science effectively. Collette is a nationally known trial attorney and lecturer who has been practicing criminal defense for over 20 years. She takes a special interest in the flaws in identification evidence, having litigated the issue at the trial level and appearing as amicus counsel for national organizations in the Washington Supreme Court.
  • Jeff Robinson will follow Colette’s talk with an address on how effectively negotiating cases involves incorporating both storytelling and science into your practice. Jeff Robinson has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 1993 and is an elected fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
  • The afternoon will conclude with a roundtable discussion by a group of civil and criminal defense attorneys. Moderated by Lauren Peach, they will discuss the practicalities they’ve learned from successfully advocating for their clients by using their clients’ stories and by incorporating social science into their practice. We end the day with a final address on how we can all incorporate these tools into our own practices.
