Training to Represent Central American Refugees
When/Where:
Friday October 17, 2014
Time: 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Faegre Baker Daniels LLP
2200 Wells Fargo Center
Century Room
Minneapolis, MN
Description:
With the unprecedented number of children and families arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, attorneys are needed to help with asylum cases. People from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are fleeing horrendous violence due to the breakdown of law, including forced gang recruitment, sexual enslavement, and extortion. Resistance to gangs often results in severe violence. United States asylum law has been narrowly applied to exclude many of these claims, leaving many children without a viable route to legal status. These children need representation. This is also an opportunity to impact asylum law in a way that can better the lives of thousands of migrants. The Advocates for Human Rights is seeking to organize and train a pool of attorneys who are willing to help these children. You need not be an immigration attorney to help. This half-day event will provide training to attorneys on representing children and families on the expedited juvenile docket in immigration court in Bloomington, Minnesota. It will also provide training to attorneys who are traveling to Artesia, New Mexico to represent children and families housed in the detention center there.
