July 15: What Does It Mean To Be An Antiracist Law School?

Join Minnesota Lawyer for a look at Mitchell Hamline's push for racial equity.

Mitchell Hamline School of Law has pledged to work toward becoming an antiracist law school, with the passage of a resolution in February 2021 by faculty.
“This vote by our faculty is crucial to getting our law school on the path towards active antiracist work instead of the more passive default of simply trying to avoid doing something racist,” said Mitchell Hamline President and Dean Anthony Niedwiecki.
“Working to center our school around antiracism is the logical next step beyond our ongoing efforts to make the school more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.”

What does implementing such a pledge involve, and how will the school hold itself accountable and be held accountable by others in its push for greater equity?
This presentation will discuss:
  • Racism in legal practice and legal education
  • Definition of antiracism and why Mitchell Hamline adopted this pledge
  • What Mitchell Hamline is doing and lessons learned so far
  • Next steps, the ultimate objective, and how progress will be measured.
