June 1: Cyber Law And Cybersecurity Insurance 101

With data breaches and security incidents happening daily, it is not a matter of IF you will experience a cybersecurity incident, but WHEN. Cybersecurity threats are growing in scale and complexity and virtually every company in all industries face growing cyber risks. As cybersecurity laws and regulations unfold and consumer lawsuits become the norm, cybersecurity remains a top concern for businesses, including the C-suite. Although there is no substitute for strong cybersecurity management, businesses often look to cybersecurity insurance policies as the last line of defense. However, cyber policies are complex, often confusing, and the cyber insurance landscape is still evolving. This 60-minute seminar will provide an update on the current state of Cyber Law, including data breaches and privacy issues; current litigation; cybersecurity laws and regulations; cybersecurity insurance coverage with practical tips on key issues and risks to consider when purchasing a cybersecurity policy; recent trends; and available cyber resources.

May 25: The International Criminal Court and Ukraine: Documenting the Experiences of Women’s Human Rights Defenders

Join The Advocates for Human Rights to hear about our work to gather firsthand accounts of the experiences of women's human rights defenders in Ukraine. Before the war, these women worked as activists ending violence against women, stopping climate change, assisting homeless women, and other social justice issues. Today, they find themselves having narrowly escaped bombs, suffering, and death-and as survivors, they are ready to come forward and share what they survived. Through one-on-one conversations with The Advocates, we are collecting these activists' stories to send to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This presentation will present the history of the ICC, the basis of its jurisdiction, the procedures it follows, and the numerous other investigations that are underway, as well as share some of the accounts we are gathering from women and the war in Ukraine. Special thanks to Faegre Drinker for hosting this event. Read more about our work on Ukraine.

May 19: Climate Disclosures: What The SEC, ISSB, & Your Investors Want To Know

The moment ESG attorneys have been waiting for has arrived. The SEC recently proposed a climate disclosure rule that has corporate legal departments and law firm practitioners alike wondering how to prepare for what the final rule may require. Simultaneously, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) has proposed a draft standard for “Climate-related Disclosures” that is currently open for comment. How are companies currently reporting these issues? What are the emerging industry standards? And how should companies message their actions to their investors?
This webinar will explore the proposed rule and the ISSB draft standard together, highlighting potential implications for public companies. Our experts will delve into what some of the emerging standards are, and also where it may make sense to deviate from those standards. Our panel will include perspectives from the legal community, as well as the investor community, to provide practical, actionable, takeaways for attorneys preparing these disclosures.
Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the current SEC proposed rule and what the likely outcome for the proposal is.
  • Understand the ISSB standard for climate-related disclosures and how it may work with the new SEC rule.
  • Explore emerging standards for disclosure across select industries, and if, or when, to deviate from those standards.
  • Delve into the investor perspective on these matters to better address investor requests for information or disclosure on these issues.

June 16: Parole Advocacy Initiative Volunteer Attorney Training

The Parole Advocacy Initiative (PAI) is a collaboration between the Parole Preparation Project and Fordham Law, that aims to increase the availability of high quality, pro bono counsel to incarcerated people appealing unjust denials of parole.
Every year, the Parole Board denies parole to hundreds of people who have served their minimum sentence and are ready to return home. For those serving indeterminate life sentences, the repeated denial of parole is essentially a second prison sentence. Unlawful parole denials contribute to mass incarceration and the aging prison population; yet the Parole Board is largely insulated from scrutiny. Challenging parole denials in court is the only way to hold the Parole Board accountable and ensure that parole determinations are just.
This training will provide an overview of the parole appeals process, and attendees will receive a detailed Appeals Manual. We will be joined by Kenneth Hailey, a former client of a PAI volunteer, who will discuss his experience before the Parole Board and the benefits of having pro bono counsel. Also joining us are two current PAI volunteers, Chris Fennell and Eve Rosahn, to share their experience representing incarcerated clients in parole denial appeals.

May 11: Technology and the Legal Practitioner: Ethical Concerns & Best Practices

Legal professionals have a duty to provide competent representation to their clients. In the past, that meant an attorney was competent based on their experience and knowledge of the law. Today, however, the concept of competence has evolved to include a duty of technological competence. Attorneys today use a wide variety of technology – from email to Word to Artificial Intelligence tools. May 25: Managing Employee Leaves in California

California’s leave laws are complex, have a broad reach, and are subject to frequent change. Join us for a webinar exploring the myriad leave laws in California and their interaction with federal law. We will discuss mandatory and optional leaves of absence under California and federal law, leave as a reasonable accommodation of a disability or legally protected medical condition (and how those terms are defined), pregnancy disability leave, workers compensation leave, California paid sick leave, and other important leaves of absences required under state and federal law. We will also address eligibility requirements, required notices, the continuation of health and/or other benefits, the mandatory or optional use of accrued leave, reinstatement rights, and state wage replacement benefits available for particular leaves. Finally, because we cannot completely move on from COVID-19 just yet, we will discuss leave as an accommodation for a COVID-related disability, and for those at risk for severe COVID-19.
Join us for this extended webinar, which will be one hour with an additional 15 minutes for questions.

June 8: Research & Drafting Techniques For Finance: Replacing LIBOR

In July of 2017, the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority announced that LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate) will be phased out in 2021, as regulators look to replace it with a more reliable alternative. LIBOR is a benchmark rate that is calculated from reported interest rates that select banks pay to borrow from each other on an unsecured basis. As the transition away from LIBOR towards a new, alternative benchmark rate is well underway, there are several steps lenders and finance counsel should take now to amend existing transaction documentation and to manage new transactions. This course will discuss the history, present and future of LIBOR

June 8: Who Gets to Be an American?

Being an American doesn’t always mean being treated like one when it comes to the rights and liberties that every citizen is supposed to have, and this is especially the case when it comes to people of color.
Since 9/11, Muslim communities have been unjustly viewed as inherently suspicious and subjected to elevated surveillance. Chinese-American scientists are targeted for investigations and prosecutions as the government becomes more concerned with Chinese influence and espionage. And at the border, militarization and advancing surveillance technology has forced migrants to make ever riskier crossings.
These surveillance programs and policies contradict the American promise of equality, and they isolate communities while making their members more vulnerable to discrimination. Join us for a live conversation on June 8 at 1 p.m. ET featuring panelists Vicki B. Gaubeca, director of the Southern Border Communities Coalition; Sahar Aziz, executive director of the Center for Security, Race and Rights at Rutgers Law School; and Ann Chih Lin, director of the University of Michigan’s Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies and moderated by Faiza Patel, director of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Liberty and National Security Program.
This event will dive into the impact on communities of color and present an opportunity to learn about efforts to organize and fight back so that everyone is granted the opportunity to feel at home on American soil.

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all.
The Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism.
Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting-edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them — in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

This session will address the ethical obligations that arise from the use of technology in the practice of law.
