November 17: Legal Writing Conventions to Remember and Legal Writing Conventions to Forget

In the halls of Mitchell Hamline School of Law, it is often hotly debated whether grammar still matters. One thing is evident, however. Some conventions matter, and some matter less (or not at all). During this CLE presentation, you will learn about five legal conventions to remember and five legal conventions to forget.
Date+Time:
November 17, 2022
Noon-1 p.m.
Speakers:
  • Peggy Kline Kirkpatrick has taught in Mitchell Hamline's legal writing program since 2010. She has taught in both the on-campus and blended learning programs. Her role has also included training and supervising adjuncts and program development. Kirkpatrick worked in private practice for several years at Leonard, Street and Deinard (now Stinson). Her work focused primarily on environmental and land use law, although she worked on a variety of litigated matters. Part of her practice also involved negotiating on behalf of clients before state and federal administrative agencies. Kirkpatrick served on the firm's recruiting committee and co-led the summer associate program one summer. Kirkpatrick's experience also includes a clerkship with the Honorable Matthew E. Johnson of the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
  • Professor Melissa Shultz has taught legal writing, family law, and a domestic violence practicum and has participated actively in bar preparation for the past five years. In addition to founding and leading the legal writing program, Shultz chaired North Texas Dallas College of Law's curriculum and bylaws committees and served on both the hiring and dean search committees. She is a co-author of "Writing by Numbers: Legal Writing Made Easy." She previously practiced business and antitrust law at King & Spalding in Washington, D.C., and owned a freelance attorney group in Texas. She earned her J.D. at the University of Texas School of Law.
