October 27: Leveraging Domestic Legislative and Judicial Processes to Advance International Human Rights

Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng is the first woman and person who originates from the African continent to serve as the Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. Her tenure as Special Rapporteur has been characterized by this spirit of pioneering and groundbreaking work using anti-colonial and anti-racist frameworks to analyse why the right to health is yet to be fully realised by UN Member States.
Join us for this UNGA side-event following the presentation of her final report to the UN General Assembly. She will be reflecting on the legacy of her tenure as Special Rapporteur in conversation with South African human rights lawyer Advocate Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane. Their discussion will focus on Dr. Mofokeng’s unique use of legislative and judicial processes in the fulfillment of her mandate - to promote the entitlements to health care, and the underlying social determinants of health that provide equality of opportunity for people to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health.
